Change Log for MEPIS Linux 2003.10

This is an informal log of the changes leading up to MEPIS Linux 2003.10 September 23 Changes prior to this date are incorporated into 2003.08.01. September 25 Created 2003.10 branch, updated and upgraded. September 26-28 2.4.22 kernel with reiserfs support built-in. Modified MIC for new kernel. Added nofloppy option to boot. September 28 Added memtest to CD boot options. Hurray, it finally fits! Fixed CD usb initialization bug introduced in 2003.08.01. September 29 Tested strategy for automounting hotplugged USB drives. Not implemented yet. September 30 Updated, upgraded, stabalized and tested development version. Minor tweaks to MIC and MCC. Tested reiserfs installation. Preinstalled NFS server on CD #1. October 1 Preinstalled alsa drivers on CD #1 but not being used by autoconfig at this time. Made paths consistent between KDE and commandline. Added some new nvidia devices to autodetection. October 4 Fixed bug in kmenu config that broke KDE CC only if root was a reiserfs. Found and fixed bug that affected USB mouse detection when running with a transitional BIOS. October 5 Found minor bug in MCC Network that could affect start at boot. Added more explanations in MCC Network messages. Added wlan0 config for Prism2 WiFi users. October 6 Changed CD boot and instructions to be easier to understand. October 7 Added a function to MEPIS Installation Center for testing and/or repairing a Linux partition. Disabled install function when running from a hard drive. leave MIC shortcut on the desktop and put a shortcut in kmenu->Utilities October 8 Changed Install LiLo and Make a Boot Floppy to not block other threads and added a Results field to observe progress. October 9 Changed long copy during installation to not block other threads. October 10 Added Tips "flashcards" to display while waiting for the long copy to complete during Installation. October 11 Revised installation process to change user and root passwords at installation time. October 12 Tested and debugged MEPIS Installation Center. October 14 Added change computer identity function to MEPIS Configuration Center. October 15 Fixed Mozilla installation problem! Installed 1.4-6 as default version. Added to cleanup items in MEPIS User Tweaks. October 16 Synchronized with the Debian pool. October 18 Added a utility to the MCC to facilite installing localizations to KDE, etc. October 19 Tested and uploaded for Beta1 October 21 Fixed bug in SaMBa, now printers work again! Found big bug with Audigy card, causes autodetect to hang. October 22 Updated patches to 2.4.22 kernel. For the first time, Abit transitional motherboard works with ACPI! October 23 Fixed autodetect to not crash with Audigy card. Added Audigy driver support. Added hardware found reporting to autodetect. October 24 Improved Tips messages. Fixed minor bug in pcmcia ifup/down. Added SmartLink (AMR) winmodem support to autodetect. October 25 Synched with Debian pool, now running Mozilla 1.5. Added experimental support for DLink DWL650+. Added MCC module for some mouse, monitor, and NVIDIA configs. Changed Wireless config to immediately update WiFi connection. October 26 Added Lucent LT, PCTel 789, and Intel 536 winmodem support to autodetect. Added experimental support for automounting hotpluged USB drives. October 27 Uploaded Beta2. Changed Wireless config in MCC so changes take effect immediately. Now WIFI can be reconfiged on the fly, including on CD. October 28 Improved USB drive hotplugging. Added more functionality to the Network section of the MCC. Added a "guest" user concept, so a keyring/flash disk can be automagically used as a traveller disk desktop, even when running from CD. Need to build a utility for creating a "guest" disk and for synchronizing user data. October 29 Built CD #2. Added more KDE localizations to CD #1 October 30 Revised CD #2 to include gnomemeeting, evolution, and galeon. Added nforce modules and autodetect code. Added Atheros modules but autodetect data is needed. October 31 Installad and tested Evolution and made some twaeks to CD #2. Fixed problem where lilo install did not include Win95 partitons. Added bittorrent and bluetooth support to CD #1. Removed guidedog from CD #1 and put on CD #2. November 1 Rewrote hotplug handler to be faster. Wrote MCC modules to format a traveller disk for the guest user concept. November 2 Wrote an experimental module to synchronize between a traveller disk and the user's regular home directory. November 3 Resolved some performance issues when writing to a USB Mass Storage device. November 4 Added spamassassin white and blacklist config to MEPIS User Utilities (formerly known as MEPIS User Tweaks). Rewrote autoconfig to make faster and to avoid cases where old autoconfig crashed. November 5 Tested new autconfig. Added more devices to hardware database. November 6 Added serial_cs driver for pcmcia modem support. Field testing new autoconfig. November 7 Made improvements to hardware database. November 8 Integrated changes with translation files and sent to translators. November 9 Tested pr1 image on 4 computers. Prepared pr1 iso for upload. Novemebr 10 Worked with stibs on new theme for MEPIS Linux. November 11 Integrated new theme for all scenarios. November 12 MOdified launch of pppoeconf in MSC to properly init the network before running config script. Removed about 80% of the non-KDE app shortcuts from kMenu. November 13 Updated jvm to be compatible with Mozilla 1.5 Several cleanup changes suggested by Dave Bechtel. Thanks Dave! November 14 Added Logical Volume Manager/RAID support on CD #1. Changed apache to NOT start on live CD. Changed UI slightly in MIC so less likely to mistakenly choose primary Win partition for reformat. November 15 Added autoconfig support for isapnp devices--needs testing. Integrated new translation files for de, fi, and fr. Thanks stibs, Otto, and Laurent! November 16 Final test before upload of rc2. Added MEPIS utility shortcuts in iceWM main menu. November 17-20 A big blur. I have no idea what I did. November 21 Fixed yet another problem with old isapnp autoconfig. November 22 Changed from xcdroast to k3b for better dvd writer support. November 23 Updated boot floppy to include scsi simulation for Cd drives. November 24 Final test. November 25 Uploaded final.
