In the terminal (command line) enter:
cat /etc/*release

In a terminal enter:
uname -r

Kernel version - More Detail
In a terminal enter:
cat /proc/version
This gives additional information about the internal kernel version in parenthesis.
Tested with Mepis 8 - as the output above shows.
