Install nvidia driver

The Nvidia video card will work on your computer without this driver, but in order to get 3D acceleration that is used by most games you need to install it. This page describes how to use the MEPIS X-Windows Assistant to do that. For the manual Nvidia method, see link at bottom.
NOTE: You may need an internet connection depending on the driver configuration you choose.

  1. Go to KMenu --> System --> MEPIS --> MEPIS X-Windows Assistant
  2. Go to Mouse and Display section.
  3. Go to nVidia tab.
  4. Configure the nVidia options for your card.
    1. nvidia (new) is for newer nVidia cards with the GeForce chip in it.
    2. nvidia (legacy) is for older nVidia cards that contain the TNT2 chip and other older chips (in Mepis =>6.5 legacy now includes up to GeForce 4 (NV18) era cards).
    3. nv (xorg) is your current display config with doing nothing.
    4. vesa (xorg) is for generic VESA video cards
  5. After you have configured it click apply.
  6. Wait until the driver is downloaded/installed (on slow connection be prepared to wait about 1 hour)
  7. Restart computer when done.

How to repair, in case KDE refuses to start (computer boots to text prompt):

  1. Boot to your install CD/DVD.
  2. Log in as root
  3. Go to KStartMenu > Run Command... type in "kdesu mutilities" (in Mepis =>6.x it is mxconfig) without the quotes.
  4. Select from "Repair" category: "Reinstall X config file" and click apply. MEPIS 6.x: On "Repair" tab select the disk and root partition from the pull-down menu, and click Apply
