Installation Troubleshooting and Tips

General Tips
- Set the computer BIOS to boot up from CD first.
- If CD fails to boot and halts with:
- GNU GRUB version 0.95 (639k lower/228228k upper memory
- [Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.
- For the first word, TAB lists possible command
- completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
- completion of a device/filename.]
- grub>
- (or similar) onscreen, try an alternative boot method.
- For example use/burn a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD : http://ultimatebootcd.com
- 1. boot using the UBCD
- 2. select "Filesystem Tools" [F3]
- 3. select "Smart BootManager" [3]
- 4. when next menu comes up, eject the UBCD and put in your Mepis CD
- 5. scroll down to the relevant CD-ROM drive (wait for the cd to stop spinning)
- 6. hit [TAB] to bring up the main menu
- 7. select "Boot it"
- 8. when prompted, save the change (not sure if this does anything)
- 9. Mepis should then boot up as intended.
- If your computer cannot boot from CD
- create boot floppies
- Make sure your downloaded image is OK
- Check the integrity of the CD
- CD-R are more reliable and faster than CD-RW it's recommended to burn Mepis on CD-R at low speed (4X).
- Test the CD on a different hardware to determine if the problem is the CD or there is a hardware incompatibility with your computer.

Troubleshooting
- Mepis doesn't boot to graphical login
- Try different boot options: use "failsafe" option if you have problems booting.
- Installation might fail if you have a flaky memory chip, use the utility provided on the CD to test the memory if you suspect there's something wrong with it.
- If your CPU is overclocked: turn off overclocking during the installation.
- Computers with Intel 965 chipset
