(or similar) onscreen, try an alternative boot method.

For example use/burn a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD : http://ultimatebootcd.com

1. boot using the UBCD

2. select "Filesystem Tools" [F3]

3. select "Smart BootManager" [3]

4. when next menu comes up, eject the UBCD and put in your Mepis CD

5. scroll down to the relevant CD-ROM drive (wait for the cd to stop spinning)

6. hit [TAB] to bring up the main menu

7. select "Boot it"

8. when prompted, save the change (not sure if this does anything)

9. Mepis should then boot up as intended.

If your computer cannot boot from CD
create boot floppies
Make sure your downloaded image is OK
Check the integrity of the CD
CD-R are more reliable and faster than CD-RW it's recommended to burn Mepis on CD-R at low speed (4X).
Test the CD on a different hardware to determine if the problem is the CD or there is a hardware incompatibility with your computer.

Mepis doesn't boot to graphical login
Try different boot options: use "failsafe" option if you have problems booting.
Installation might fail if you have a flaky memory chip, use the utility provided on the CD to test the memory if you suspect there's something wrong with it.
If your CPU is overclocked: turn off overclocking during the installation.
