Installing MEPIS on a Dell latitude D505
- I recommend using MEPIS 3.4 or greater for the best hardware compatability. None of the 3.3 versions worked with the built-in ipw2100 wireless card, though you can use NDISwrapper.
- I have not tested the built-in modem with MEPIS. lspci identified it with no problems, but running kudzu -p I do not see a driver listed for it. I could never get it working under SM2004, which is the last time I tried doing so.
- If the lid gets closed or the lid button gets pushed, the video is gone and there's no way to get the screen to restart without rebooting. With SimplyMEPIS 2004, restarting X (ctrl-alt-bkspace) would get the monitor back. With SimplyMEPIS 3.3 and 3.4, it's just gone and you need to reboot. Haven't found a fix for this.
- You can get decent video accelleration using the i810 driver. If you aren't getting it by default, do a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and tell it do use the i810 driver.
