Installation

Since the machine has no CD drive, I created a bootable USB stick by launching MEPIS on another machine and using the MEPIS System Assistant to create the stick. By pressing 0 during boot sequence, the machine can be booted from USB. Installation was uneventful.

Network

MEPIS correctly recognizes and configures the wired and wireless chips, but wireless kept hanging up on me. It now seems to be resolved by adding

irqpoll

to the boot line in Grub.

After a suspend/resume cycle, network connection could not be restored. This was resolved by creating a file called 'modules' in /etc/pm/config.d and adding the following line:

SUSPEND_MODULES="wl"

This will unload the driver for the broadcom card before suspend and reload it when resuming. So far it works OK, even if resuming is a bit slow.

Sound

This is a funny one. Soundcard was detected, but no sound was played back. In the end I found a post where someone said you had to modify /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf and change

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

to

options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba

Conclusion

This is a wonderful little machine. It is snappy, has a crisp screen, built-in microphone works, webcam works, touchpad works, CPU scaling works, brightness control works. It all just works....
