Dropbox is a Web-based file hosting service that uses cloud computing to enable users to store and share files and folders with others across the Internet using file synchronization. It is free if you use a small amount of storage space, or you can pay for more storage.

MEPIS 8.5 and 11

Dropbox can be installed by Synaptic using the default repos.

Run from Kmenu >>> Internet >>> Dropbox. You will go through the setup dialogs. In the last setup dialog box, If you clear the checkbox on "Enable extended attributes on Dropbox folder (may require root password)" fstab won't be altered. If your fstab is altered, see the warning in the 'Tips and Tricks' section below.

Once setup the first time, Dropbox will set up a folder (called "Dropbox") in your /Home directory that is synchronized automatically with the online one. To upload files, all you have to do is open the file manager and drag and drop the items you want to the Dropbox folder.

While running Dropbox, you will have a small blue box icon in your panel that will indicate the status. Clicking this icon will open up your Dropbox folder with [[[Dolphin]] and right-clicking the icon will give you various program options.

When away from your computer, you can access your Dropbox files via any web browser by logging into https://www.dropbox.com/

Tips and tricks

Dropbox may rewrite your fstab file if you gave it root access during setup. Dropbox install disables the line that gives access to the home partition, by putting a # in front of the line. To repair, log into root after the install and remove the # in front of that line in fstab. Then log out and you can access your normal user login.

There exist applications for iPhone and Android devices, so that you can have synchronized access to your uploaded files from anywhere.
