Editing sources.list

The list of repositories used by Synaptic to install software can be modified as needed. The list is stored in the file /etc/apt/sources.list and can be edited by either of these methods below. If you are not sure what your list should look like, please see Recommended sources.list file for your version of MEPIS.

GUI method

  • open Synaptic by clicking KMenu --> System --> Package Manager, and provide the root password when prompted
  • On the menu bar, click Settings --> Repositories. What you see in the window are the entries in the file /etc/apt/sources.list
  • Add, remove or modify sources as you like.

CLI method

  1. type kdesu kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list in KMenu --> Run Command or in Konsole (users of differing desktop environments should do something similar)
  2. type the root password when prompted
  3. you may edit now the file just like in any text editor
