To be able to install programs from Debian repository:

  1. start Synaptic.
  2. go to Setting -> Repositories.
  3. select the checkbox to enable the Debian repository.
  4. click OK.

After you enable Debian source don't forget to do a "Reload" or apt-get update

See here the recommended sources.list file.

If you enable Debian sources:

  1. please READ the Synaptic/apt-get prompts before answering "yes". Don't answer "yes" if the command tries to remove packages.
  2. consider pinning nvidia drivers (if you have nvidia card) that might break if you do a careless upgrade.
