From MEPIS Documentation Wiki
Something seems to be seriously broken in this wiki search. When I type "NFS" to the box on the left and press "Search" button, there are no results at all while there are many pages related to NFS. Pushing "Go" finds one of them. Including all possible options in detailed search does not help. Does it work this way for everybody else? If yes, it is a serious problem which cripples this wiki. I have no idea what is going on, sometimes search works for me but mostly it does not. When I really want to find something here, I use Google, e.g. "site:www.mepis.org NFS wiki" - voila, many pages returned.
Search on the main www.mepis.org page (click MEPIS logo to get there) uses Google - could wiki search use it as well? Better yet, can someone diagnose and fix wiki search, please? --Hanzl 13:12, 5 February 2008 (EST)
- The go/search functions are part of the MediaWiki software, but has never seemed to work very well. That is why we introduced the Google custom search last year. The Go button (=return) stops when it finds a page with the name that matches the search item, so that seems to be OK. The Search button hardly works, however, as far as I can see, and I always use the custom search when I am actually looking for something. I will pass this on to Adrian, who knows the software better than I do. I don't believe we can upgrade the software ourselves, unfortunately. Jerry bond 13:34, 5 February 2008 (EST)
I don't think that Wiki indexes words of 3 or less letters, if you try other search you'll see that it works. "Go" works because it goes directly to the specific page it doesn't look in the index. -- AdrianTM 13:48, 5 February 2008 (EST)
- Argh, yes, that is it probably. Thanks. That "sometimes works - sometimes does not" was driving me crazy, but I dit not solve it. Maybe we should publish this knowledge somehow? To make sure that the search does not drive people crazy? --Hanzl 13:58, 5 February 2008 (EST)
Perhaps an explanation of the use of the summary box could be added to the wiki help page. I mistakenly thought that the box was for a summary of the entire article, rather than for the current edit. Maybe in the requests section? It now says 'document changes' with no explanation of how. Marvin02 11:13, 16 March 2009 (EST)
- Good idea, I will try to revise it for greater clarity. Jerry bond 12:08, 16 March 2009 (EST)
