NOTE: this information was assembled for the MEPIS 6.x series, and it is uncertain at this point how accurate it is for MEPIS 7.0.

Steps to get your printer up and running...and printing nicely.

1. Get the correct drivers from here: ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/

 (they cover i550, i560, i850,i860,i950, i990)

You need:

  bjfilterpixusXXXi-X.X-X.i386.rpm (where X.X.X = model number)

AND the corresponding cups driver:

  bjfiltercups-X.X-X.i386.rpm (where X.X.X = model number)

2. Use alien to convert the rpms to debs (apt-get install alien if you don't have it)

  $ su alien <rpm package>

You MAY need to use the "-c" option to alien when dealing with the file with the printer name

  $ su alien -c <rpm package>.

I did not, but apparently some have.

3. Install:

  $ dpkg -i bjfilterpixusXXXi_X.X-X.i386.deb
  $ dpkg -i bjfiltercups-X.X-X.i386.deb

4. Install:

  $ apt-get install libtiff3g
  $ apt-get install libpng2

!!! Warning! The info contained in this article pertains to older versions of MEPIS !!!

(I had to add the Ubuntu Universe Repositories in order to retrieve the libtiff3g package (at least at the time of this writing, it may become available in the MEPIS Repositories in the future).

They are:

  (deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe)
  (deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe)

Once the libtiff3g package is retrieved, I would delete or disable these repositories to avoid other problems.

5.Restart Cups:

  $ su /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

or reboot.

6. Then use the Add Printer function And you will now see your new driver in the list as PIXUS XXXi verX.X
