Install Mouse Themes/Cursors/Icons/Xcursor

Steps for SimplyMEPIS 6, (may work in older versions)

  • As root make new folder "icons" in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/" (I use File Manager - Super User Mode)
  • In that new icons folder make new folder "default" in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/"
  • Via Synaptic, do a refresh first, search for "crystalcursors", select and install.
  • Copy cursor themes folders you want to use from "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/" to "/usr/share/icons/" (copy as root)
  • Start a terminal session, su to root. Run "update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme" choose one of the themes you copied across in the last step. This step and next step will set the Xcursor theme used before you login for all users.
  • Copy "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme" file to "/usr/share/icons/default/", (as root).
  • Go to System Settings > Hardware > Input > Mouse > Cursor Theme, choose your colour/style > click apply > Re-start X server or reboot. This step will set the mouse theme used after you login just for that user.

Note: Xcursor and user mouse cursor don't have to be the same style. I use a cyrstal blue for Xcursor and redglass for mouse.
