Quick Fixes for KDE 3.4.2 upgrade
From MEPIS Documentation Wiki
!!! Warning! The info contained in this article pertains to older versions of MEPIS !!!
These are the general fixes that are needed after upgrading from a normal Mepis installation to KDE 3.4.2. Mepis 3.4 had KDE 3.4 by default, these instructions do not apply.
Fonts too small
Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if you switched to Xorg) Add to the Monitor section: DisplaySize 325 260 if you are using 1280x1024 resolution or DisplaySize 260 195 for 1024x768. For other resolution calculate the numbers using this formula:
Screensize multiplied by 25.4 and divided by 100 (eg: 1024 x 25.4/100 = 260 and 768 x 25.4/100 = 195)
If this doesn't seem to have any effect after restarting X (Logout from KDE and then restart X with CTRL-ALT-Backspace) and you are using an nVidia video card, another option may be required. Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if you switched to Xorg) Add to the Device section: Option "UseEdidDpi" "FALSE" For more information see nVidia Driver README
CD, DVD and HD missing from Konq
In Konqueror right-click on Devices -> Properties -> go to URL tab and change devices:/ to media:/
Driver Icons Missing from Desktop
To see the drivers' icons on the sceen start Control Center -> Desktop -> Behavior -> Device Icons and enable the ones you want to get displayed. OR: go to ~home/.kde/share/apps and delete the folder konqsidebartng and its contents. Restart Konqueror and you should have the complete 3.4 sidebar, which offers more features than the 3.3. sidebar
No Delete Function Only Move to Trash
open file manager super user mode > enter root password > select settings > configure konqueror in behaviour section enable show delete context menu entries which bypass trashcan > click apply > ok
if you do not like the large tips when you hover your mouse over an icon then open control centre > select desktop then panels > there are 4 tabs select appearance > uncheck enable icon mouseover effects > click apply and close
