Intro

Skype is a proprietary Voice and Video Chat application that allows users to make telephone calls from their computer to other Skype users free of charge, or to landlines and cell phones for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer, short message service, video conferencing and its ability to circumvent firewalls.

Installation

MX-14

The easiest way to download the current version of Skype as a *deb is probably the direct download. Details in the Debian Wiki.

Hardware issues

No sound

If you have either no audio in (speakers) or no audio out (microphone), check your Kmix settings. Select all channels and make all the sliders up. Also check the settings in Skype options (CTRL-O) >>> Sound Devices

Sound errors

If skype gives a "Problem with Audio Playback" error when trying to make a call, you likely have some hardware conflict between your sound devices, often caused by a webcam with a microphone. Try Skype with the webcam unplugged. Check the "Sound not working" link below.

Webcam video

You can test your webcam in Skype options (CTRL-O) >>> Video Devices.

If your webcam is not seen by Skype but is by another app such as wxcam, try loading Skype from a console with the following command:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

If that doesn't work, try

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype
