Galbraith Latency Patch Now in MEPIS 11.0 Alpha

The Mike Galbraith latency patch, which is said to improve desktop performance by an order of magnitude, has been backported by Warren to the 2.6.36 kernel, and released for the SimplyMEPIS 11.0 alpha test cycle.

SimplyMEPIS 11.0 Goes Alpha

Nov 10, 2010, 10AM EST -- The first Alpha grade release of SimplyMEPIS 11.0 has been uploaded to the MEPIS master site. It is available for immediate download by MEPIS subscribers. The global ISO mirrors should make the files available to the general public within 24 hours.

The names of the ISOs are: SimplyMEPIS-CD_10.9.70_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_10.9.70_64.iso Although they are called "CD" ISOs, they are about 800 MB in size and will fit on DVD or USB media. They will not fit on CD media.

At this time, 11.0 is closely aligned with Debian Squeeze but with a 2.6.36 kernel. This release provides a KDE 4.4.5 desktop.

MEPIS Releases ISOs for 1GB USB Keys

Morgantown, WV, Apl 21, 2010 -- MEPIS LLC has announced the upload of SimplyMEPIS 8.5 ISOs that will fit on a 1GB USB key. The USB sized ISO files for 32 and 64 bit processors are SimplyMEPIS-USB_8.5.03-rel1_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-USB_8.5.03-rel1_64.iso respectively.

Warren Woodford explained: "This build includes the packages that are preloaded in the CD sized ISOs and in addition contains a number of extra applications and basic localization support for a few languages. As the first release of it's kind the package additions and the language support are a bit of an experiment. I imagine we will make adjustments based on feedback from users."

Warren reported: "In the past week, we've fixed some bugs reported by the community and updated the MEPIS Assistants. And we've updated some packages containing bug fixes: digikam 1.1.0, ghostscript 8.71, kdebase-workspace 4.3.4-5 and wl-modules The community is hard at work on translations, updated manual, and a couple of new utilities. I expect RC3 to be ready in a week or so. It should be the last RC before we go final with 8.5."

The ISO files for 32 and 64 bit processors are SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.4.97-b5_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.4.97-b5_64.iso respectively. Deltas, requested by the MEPIS community, are also available.

Warren Woodford reported: "We are coming down the home stretch on the development of SimplyMEPIS version 8.5. There is some work to be done on MEPIS components, but the major packages are locked in to what may be their final versions. We've been asked to make more package updates, but we can't go much further without switching to a Debian Squeeze base."
