Talkin' Tech

If you like talking tech then you have found the right place. This is my first blog entry in what I hope to be at least a weekly entry that talks about what we all like best...TECH! I am an avid reader of Digg, Slashdot, OsNews, and just other random sites devoted to tech news. I am also very opinionated about what I read and I am not afraid to voice my $0.02.
What you can expect from this blog is my ramblings about what is happening in the tech world as well some previews about what is going on in the world of MEPIS, especially with how it relates to tech. One thing that I can think of as an example is the recent release of Google's Picasa for Linux. After downloading it and previewing it I feel that some of the features are very nice but are already covered by what I feel is a better overall program: Digikam. Maybe in a later blog entry I will go more indepth about why I feel this way.
I also am going to encourage comments on my blog entries but please keep them on-topic. This will be one of the ways that Warren and myself will get to hear your opion about certain trends and we will be able to understand how the community feels about certain things. You will also get to hear what we are thinking and why we think the way we do.
I hope that this "themed blog" is something that interests many of you and you will be frequent readers and comment contributers.

With Picasa I am able to upload all my pictures at one time to my online printing service, I have no such option with Digikam and my online service (as far as I know) doesn't allow FTP or other reasonable way to upload multiple pictures except a plugin in Internet Exporer.
Other than that I found Picasa a little bit slow to start and ugly since it doesn't integrate with KDE theme.

Congrats on the new blog!
Not to be a sycophant or anything but I love what you are doing here at MEPIS. I've been playing with 3.3.2 SOHO test server and MEPIS 4 as jumping off points for a little project I'm trying to put together. I like them both.
Best of luck and keep us the good work!!!

Great, this blog thing. Gives a sense of aliveness to the site, and a wonderful way for you guys and the community (though I must say I kinda 'not like' that word) to interact....

Oh yeah, I forgot. Picasa is fine I like digikam better but both suffer for lack of newer printer support. I have a nice new lexmark P915 which makes wonderful photo prints but I have to use ms windows to print them. This would seem to me to be a large problem. There are still too many back breaking problems like this. I love linux/debian/mepis but find it limited by basic issues of usage such as printer support. Still, Mepis is my main/favorite os and generally I like kde apps much better than windows offerings.

Uh...Jon. There isn't a Mr. Wordford here.
Could you rephrase your question?

...I see by your response, Mr. Fortord that you lack the appropriate "people skills", "forward thinking", and ability to "look outside the box" to work within our stodgy, polyester-suited, marketing-driven organization.
Thank you so much for providing us with a copy of your resume. We shall store it away safely in our Human Resources files that are located in a deserted salt mine, never to be seen again.
Also, would you be able to provide a professional reference for a recent applicant who's name is "EnigmaOne"? So far, he seems to possess the grooming, and friendly smile that we like our employees to have. Especially when they are standing behind the counter taking orders during the heavy lunch rush.

mepis website has no way to report bugs? & wifi cards no support
Posts: 3
I was looking forward to a real User
friendly desktop after reading LinuxFormat79D
interview with SimplyMepis architect Warren Woodford.
Until I ran the bootable CD.
It does not support WIFI card in my Sony Vaio notebook
model TR1AP. internal card is from Intel, in addition I put in my SMC PCMCIA wifi card and it too was not
supported. I know this is really a problem with Simply
Mepis roots.. Knoppix which also did not support these
wifi cards. However I'm running SUSE 10.0 from
LXF 74d and both WiFi cards work perfectly.
I think both this BLOG and the Mepis site could use
a bug reporting button.

A link to report bugs would be a good thing, in the mean time please send feedback to .

Steve,
Your comment was very off topic. I have created a forum thread for you under the wireless networking section. You post seems to be much more appropriate to that section then this blog. You can get to that thread by following this link: http://www.mepis.org/node/10084 . Please keep any further comments about this topic on that thread.

Maybe this one's on topic

Hey Matt et al,
One of the things that has got me puzzled for quite a while is this. Normally, with every release of a new version you would expect more features, better support of more hardware and easier integration. To a major extent, that is of course the case.
However, browsing the forums I notice a lot of users that have complained (both in 3.4.3 as in the 6.0 betas), that certain things no longer work or work differently. Mos notably:
- wireless cards that worked out of the box in 3.3.1 are now giving problems
- Turboprint does not install correctly in 6.0 beta 3/4
- Alsaconf was removed by Ubuntu, and it was quite a useful tool to resolve sound issues
- Nvidia headaches...
Maybe you would like to dedicate an entry to the Linux / Ubuntu / Mepis development cascade, and explain how come that upgrades may sometimes mean problems, and in what way beta fase testings / reports can iron out such glitches. More importantly, if there are known compatibility issues with a final version, would it be possible to warn users beforehand, so as to prevent them from getting frustrated?
Cheers

At the risk of being off-topic, would you like fries with that??

Picasa's intial disk scan
Posts: 519
This laptop is setup as a dual boot with the XP that came with it. I run MEPIS at least 99+% of the time, having only two uses for XP. One is to use a PCL prgmming app that is availabe only on XP, and two is to connect to work with a VPN that is setup only for XP.
When I boot into Linux I do not have the NTFS partition mounted. Imagine my suprise, while scanning through the pictures that Picasa loaded up during its intial scan, on discovering three pics that are only on the NTFS partion!! It seems that Picasa mounted the NTFS drive and scanned it automatically.
I could have inadvertently edited those pics and wrote to the NTFS partition, which could have corrupted that partition. I quickly removed those pics from the gallary and made sure Picasa didn' try that again.
Anyone else notice that?
As far as Picasa goes, its editing features are superior to digiKam. It is easier to email photos directly from Picas than it is from digiKam, but not much. DigiKam requires traversing through a menu and then using a dialog. But, the only camera import I could find for Picasa was through gphoto2, a command line app. digiKam wins by a landslide here.
It would be nice to merge the best features of both.
All in all, I liked Picasa, but I still use digiKam to import pictures.

Allright im ready for a little tech that might help a lot of users like myself in the neighborhood of keeping up with all the changes in Mepis and Debian . Specifically changes that affect info and hardware info commands ie a lot of things that used to work dont anymore. Since the use of udev and the 2.6.15-xxx kernel modules are integrated elsewhere i presume.I realise linux is a moving target and info to keep up seems to be a major problem so where else to find out how where to garner this info . Developers i assume have the same needs and possibly have a source the common user can tap into to stay informed and somewhat up to date. Most of the info available on the net is useless due to age and changes etcetera .
So i thought if time permits you might be able give me a clue on the inner workings or where to find the info.

...and I'd wager that we are in substantial agreement over the Picasa/Digikam head-to-head.
It was nice to test drive.
It's great that Google folded-back patches into Wine.
Too slow.
Colors are 'off'.
The UI is clunky and counter-intuitive.
The fuzzy one will, of course, be keeping an eye on you.
