No Internet: need wireless to work

I am renting a basement apartment and was assured I could use the landlord's internet if I dropped a cable or used wireless.
Well wireless is working on Windows but I cannot get a connection on Linux.
What good is synaptic if I don't have an internet connection with which to connect?
Anyone have pointers on how to get Linux to recognize my D-Link DWL-122 USB so I can connect?
