PCMCIA modem card not detected

hi, i am new to linux in general, ive been using kubuntnu for 2 months now but i want to move on to a more user friendly kde linux os i found simply mepis and i love the packages that comes with it. but the sad part is my internet is not working with it. i mean, i think the problem is it cant detect the laptops pcmcia card. im using an old dell c3px right now its working perfectly fine with windows so there is no problem wit hard ware. i tried booting simply mepis using the newer system and older system options but still no internet. any help will surely be apprecikated this is my the only problem and is indeed a big one that i encountered. over all i love mepis. i jsut want my net to work on it.

Check modem settings

I'm pretty new at this myself, but maybe my experience will help you:

Be sure to try various "modem device" settings. Mepis doesn't automatically detect my card, but when I try different settings I've always found the one that works. This is *not* the case with Ubuntu.

So when you call up KPPP, go to Configure, then Modem, then Edit, then Modem Device. Try various ones; be sure to click "ok" each time and then see if the card is detected. Right now /dev/ttyS4 is working great for me. Others don't.

Hope this helps.

ok thnx for the reply il go

ok thnx for the reply il go try i really want the net to work since it really is important im jsut wondering why mepis cant detect i read from reviews that mepis has good hardware detection. kubuntu did a great and easy install with this laptop that im using now. but i was simply not contented with kubuntu too much to alter before you can actually enjoy it.
i do hope your suggestion works thnks

Keep trying!

I think you'll have good luck. My case is almost identical to yours: the modem works fine in my Windows partition, and I'm using a Dell laptop (Latitude CPx) too. I always need to find the right modem setting when I install a version of Mepis. But it has always worked fine afterward. Mepis does have good hardware detection. My modem has worked perfectly on Mepis 3.4 as well as 6.0 beta. Obviously, our cards may be different, but just keep trying. And don't forget to hit "okay" after you select a different setting!

i did what you say kppp is

i did what you say kppp is the dial wizard right?

i tried changng until tty20 but off course no luck. yes my lap[top is a dell cpx latitude. and my connection is dsl. through ppoe. My card is pcmcia for rj 45 rj 11. it is working perfectly fine with windows and in ubuntu but not in mepis any other suggestions? i want simply mepis badly. i really like it overall

Kppp and ppoe

Okay, here's where my ignorance figures in. I'm not sure of the relationship between kppp and ppoe. Kppp is the dial wizard. I use only that because I have a university dial-up account (hey, it's free). Since I've never used ppoe, I don't know whether you use that *with* or *instead of* kppp.

Someone using DSL needs to jump in here to help. Anyone?

Here are just a couple of thought:

When you click on ppoe to configure it in Konsole, is your card detected?

If kppp is still necessary, let me repeat one point (it helps always to double check): Be sure to click "okay" on the settings tab each time you try a different setting. If you query modem without checking "okay," you'll continue to get a "no modem" or "modem is busy" response.

Now let's hope someone using DSL will clarify the ppoe/kppp relation.

PCMCIA modem card

Since you have said you have a PCMCIA card, you first must make sure that Mepis is loading a proper driver under cardmgr for your cardbus device. You may see info on this using the dmesg command or as the system is booting up. Also check /var/log/messages.

Next your system must configure or bind the PCMCIA card to the modem and load the proper driver for it. I can't tell you how or if this is possible in your version of Mepis. You might Google for some how-to's to see what is involved.

And finally, I believe KPPP is a GUI for configuring a dial-up connection in Linux. PPPoE is a protocol for logging into certain DSL broadband systems. I'm not entirely sure that the two are even related.

Since you said the PCMCIA modem worked under Kubuntu, you might try to revisit that distribution, see how they made it work, and try to duplicate under Mepis.

Good luck........

indeed you are making sense

indeed you are making sense of the problem but the bigger problem is im completely new to linux and i am very weak at coding
