TV hangs X on disk I/O

I'm prety sure I've narrowed my problem down to this.
While running xawtv on my bt848 tv card [Nvidia fx5200] If something tries to write to disk the whole desktop freezes and hard reboot is the only wat out.
Any Ideas what's going on?

we've got one box with a bttv card and i can perform some experiments if i know which version you are using.
in the meantime open a konsole and run 'top' where you can see it and then start xawtv - not fullscreen.
top will tell you what is using the processor
tvtime is a very stable application - have you tried alternate tv software? changing application is easiest if it solves the problem
