Sandisk Cruzer Mini 256mb problem

Hi,

I am wondering if anybody has had any luck using this usb drive with MEPIS. It is not detected during boot up, or even if I just plug it in after boot. The little light on it never even comes on so it seems like mepis is just missing it.
From searching around online, it looks like the drive works in some distros at least. For example, it was detected fine when I tried it w/knoppix.
Any ideas?

I've been trying to get my US

I've been trying to get my USB 2.0 8 in 1 card reader to work. The device is identified with the USB View program in Mepis it must be being seen, but how do I get a file manager to see a camera
flash card?

Scandisk Cruzer

JT,
I just recently bought the same item and plugged it into the back of my machine, booted it up, lights came on and all. Under mount partitions, it showed up as another drive. I was a Dell Latitude C600 laptop, with dual boot Win2K and Mepis 2003.10.23. It has worked fine. I haven't really gotten in to using it. I will be using it tomorrow. Check in you machine's BIOS that you do have a USB port and that it is turned on.
Good Luck Laughing out loud

PS - JT - Used the scandisk USB drive after this post and I had no problems with it. I did boot into MEPIS with the drive already contected to the laptop. I have disconnected and then reconnected it with out a problem. Has yours started working yet??

SanDisk Cruisers

JT,
If you are still looking at this post, things went down hill in the last two months in regards to Sandisk USB drives. Switching between Windows 2000 at work, Xandros on my home desktop, Mepis on the latop, I managed to "fry" Shocked three (3), yes three (3), Puzzled of these USB's since Spetember. The most recent was this past friday, 12/09. As my wife states, "What are you doing wrong?". I think it is the laptop with Linux. For somereason the USB ports just fry the USB pen. Does anyone else have thoughts? I'm reverting to using CDRW's between work and home. I have to take stuff home on, copy to which ever PC I use, and one to take stuff to work, copy to that PC to work on. It should be "fun" keeping them straight.Eye-wink

Hello Linux (Mepis & Xandros)

drlizau's picture

read something

about these sticks and that the new way of accessing them doesn't cache what goes on the stick so there are a lot more read and write accesses to the sticks and the stick 'burns out'

Maybe Try Another Brand or Check Your Methods

I own dozens of different kinds of usb keys and the only brand I have
ever had problems with was the ones with "cruz" in the name....

Depending on what kernel you are using Mepis acts differently initializing a usb key.

With 2.4 you will probably have to run the "kernel 2.4 only (Find USB/SCSI/Firewire)" option located in Kstart>>System>>...

With 2.6 if you have a floppy in your box watch the light on the front
the system scans all peripherals while running init on usb keys and when the floppy light finally goes out..you will find /dev/sda???
available for mounting as a new device..

Either way let us know here what you experience and WE will help you get it up and running... for FREE can you believe that LOL

Hi Joe!

If you close Konqueror while it is displaying the contents of the Sandisk then the Sandisk is seen by the system as "busy" and unplugging it at that point may damange the file structure if you haven't issued a "flush" command. I don't believe it is "burned out", you just need to reformtat it using VFAT.

I'm running MEPIS 3.4-2.rc1 and I have a 1GB MiniCruzer Sandisk.
When I plug it in I get an icon on my desktop. I double click the icon to open Konqueror on the Sandisk. After I finish copying files back and forth I make sure that I display my home directory (or any other directory EXCEPT the /mnt/usb/whatever), then I close Konqueror.
Then I right mouse on the desktop icon and click the "Safely remove" option (or something simiar to that), which serves as the flush command. Then I pull the Sandisk out of the USB port. Following this method I've never lost data or harmed my Sandisk.

Sorry, I have been busy getting my materials ready for my next round of students at my middle school Eye-wink. I also ran into some problems with another Linux OS. I am now wholy on MEPIS, so getting the affor mentioned 1GB Titanium Cruzer up and running would be great. It would save on the CD bruning. Also remember doing pretty much what one idividual said about it being "busy" while I was pulling it out. I'm willing to try it again.

I need to get this USB stick up and running first, then I can make sure to do what you have mentioned GreyGeek. I'll keep an eye on this forum. I would like to go back to the USB drive. I'm also going full Mepis here at home. I did run Xandros for the past ten months, but had a "significant" user problem, which only Mepis would let me work around. So I'm staying here and backing Warren and crew Smiling
