Morgantown, WV, June 15, 2006 -- MEPIS has announced RC1, the release candidate of SimplyMEPIS 6.0. RC1 contains KDE 3.5.3, the latest security updates, an improved USB media handler, and the CD is compressed with squashfs.

The ISO image is available for download and test in the mepis 'testing' subdirectory at public mirrors and the MEPIS Subscriber's Site. For up to 7 days, please send feedback to

MEPIS has added a media handler for USB keys to replace the one provided by KDE. A panel applet is provided to notify users of available package upgrades. The kerenl was tweaked so the bootable-installable CD can use the squashfs filesystem. Warren Woodford of MEPIS said "We felt it was important to switch to squashfs on the CD, so it would be easier to develop MEPIS releases for additional platforms."

RC1 incorporates the latest security updates from the Ubuntu Dapper pool. KDE 3.5.2 has been superceded by KDE 3.5.3. Warren explained "We didn't want to change anything so basic this late in the release cycle, but KDE contains over 600 improvements, including better integration with cups 1.2. Community members tried 3.5.3 and reported it to be rock solid, so we decided it was a safe bet."

With feedback and suggestions from the community, a number of small bugs were fixed. During the next week or two more bugs will be fixed and the MEPIS utilities will continue to be restructured. Final release is planned for around June 27.
