Using English but want to type Japanese

I want to be able to type in Japanse in various applications including word processing, browsing etc. I want to keep the English interface of MEPIS and I want to be able to switch easily between English and Japanese input - much the same way as the ime on windowsxp.
Can somebody give me a step by step on what I need to do to set this up? I'm very new to Linux having switched from Windows.
