[SOLVED]saving home directory issue

I upgraded via Cd, and saved the home directories. All my users were accessible after logging in, but the data in them were not.
I used an older version of the live Cd to check the home partition and after finding all the user data intact; I upgraded using the SimplyMEPIS_6.0-beta5_i386.iso.. This resolved the issue; though I would rather be running the new rc2.
I did check the MD5 checksum before burning the .iso and they matched.
The user name I used and password were identical to the previous installs.
Their seemed to be a hang at 95% completion of the upgrade but I thought nothing of it. Another thing I noticed is when I input the default user it did not acknowledge with the usual prompt asking if I wanted to use the previous identical user.
Has anyone else come across this problem? If so let me know how you resolved the issue.

I'm using an older emachine w/
intel pentium 4 2.60Ghz
2 hard drives- western digital w/ MS XP and Suse 10.0 on hda
seagate w/ Mepis 6.0 beta 5 and Fedora 4 on hdb
mepis is installed on hdb1 /, hdb2 swap, hdb3 home
512Mb ram
soundblaster live! 24bit
ati visiontek xtasy 9600series w/ radeon 9600 se agp, 128 Mb video

Numlock is off in RC2 live,

Numlock is off in RC2 live, so if you have a cipher in the password you might not have noticed that it did not register the number.
Use the ciphers at the top of your keyboard.

Numlock is off in RC2

Thanks for the suggestion Yamal, it's really appreciated. That well may be the what happened; though I doubt it.

I think for now I will just upgrade using apt-get or synaptic. The repositories have been stable enough since moving to the Ubuntu packages that the risk is negligable.
Downloading the .iso and installing via Cd is a habit I picked up when the repositories were less stable.

similarities

First let me just acknowledge that we are here talking about 'Release Candidate' versions.
Over the last two, RC1 RC2 I have noticed a tendency to hang at the 95% point you mention but also at 70% using different copies of install discs & using both on different computers.
By repeated attempts I managed to get the installs completed but it does seem strange as it never happened before & was repeatable over different machines. Also noted in my case the 'need' to use F3 to determine video, if not Mepis was lost. No big deal but it never happened before the RC's. OK DATSIT for the info feedback for what it's worth.
Either way it's... "GO MEPIS-the Windoze Killer"
Mepis just gets better & better.

It could be your CD

I have had some strange problems installing Mepis from re-used rewritable CDs. Then when I burned the same Mepis ISO to a new blank CD the problems were gone.

I know that everyone's HW is different, but I have had no problems with M v6.0 RC2 on my home-grown PC and my HP Pavilion.

also problems with CD's

I have had problems burning to maxwell cd-rw's. I always verify md5sum when using k3b, 1st to check the file I downloaded and 2nd to check that what I burned is what I downloaded. With the maxwell cd-rw's I can get a good first burn but after that k3b will say I got a good burn but the md5sum check fails.

I have had the same problem on different machines with different brands of burners and other software using the maxwells. I have had no problems using verbatium cd-rw's.

I have had several problems burning discs which is why I like k3b. K3b lets me easily verify from download to final burn that everthing is correct.

Has anyone else had problems with other brands of media? I know I will buy verbatium products.

possibly

I had encountered similar long ago with some cheap Akai CD-Rw's but have long since sent them to 'CD heaven' or wherever they go. Eye-wink But the two different brands & speeds of CD-RW on two different machines showed the same symptoms.
I wonder if it is where the CD changes speed?
Bought some 'gold' CD-R's & with the next install I will try both out of interest. Presently all seems to be running fine so it's a matter of "leave sleeping dogs lie" Eye-wink

Re brand traps.

K3b itself is usually very reliable.

Dare I suggest that the "brand" alone is unfortunately a rather unreliable way of selecting what should be good CD's these days 'cos it depends more on the factory & other quality specs moreso than the brand unfortunately.

Several years ago when there was a worldwide shortage of CD's manufacturers were getting their CD's made in a variety of factories & some normally top brands were selling disks that were utter crap. I won't name brands as the situation has since changed.

And then of course there are differences between recorders.

Oh well - as they say - "life wasn't meant to be simple" Eye-wink

problem solved

YAMAL,I reinstalled using the same cd as before. I used your suggestion and everything worked. Though the install still hung at 95%, it had no effect that I could see. Thanks again for your help.
