MEPIS RC2 WILL NOT INCLUDE WINDOWS IN ITS GRUB

windows in son hda2, do I edit the grub that file in mepis? which is on hdb?

so if I edit the grub where is the file to edit???

why is this happening now at rc2

I have Mepis on hda1 and Windows XP on hdb1 and I have to manually add this to my /etc/boot/menu.list before I can boot to Windows:

title Windows XP
root (hd1,0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

not sound stupid, but I can't even locate /etc/boot/menu.list

i did find menu.list, I could not write to it.

my windows in on hda2

mepis is on hdb1

and you need to be root to write to it

Works fine on my Laptop. I did notice that when I selected the 686 Kernel that I had to edit grub in order to have it listed and being able to boot from it.

The software ISO image installs Grub onto the MBR. How many Drives do you have? 1 or 2? How is your drive or drives partitioned? The Grub file should be installed to the MBR of the Primary hard drive. During the install of Mepis it will do this for you and tell you if it was successful. I have Windows of Drive C and Drive D has Mepis (2 Drive system) . It installs fine. When it boots up Mepis is on the Menu and so is Windows XP.

How many drives?
How are they partitioned?
Where is Windows located?

2 drive system
windows is on drive 0 hda2

mepis is on drive 1 hdb

mepis indicates it has written the grub, it has and windows is not in it when it boots.

I have tried editing the grub and what ever I do, i get partition does not exist.

I tried some other distros and only mandriva one, since its grub actually locates and verifies the location of the windows part as hda2. when i edit the
mepis grub (after numerous isntalls) again I get grub error 25, 27 and invalid partition.

I had no problem with mepis until rc2. I did the whole disk install and and the custom and the result is the same.

Now, the strange part is Xandros, Linspire, All which have worked fine on my system, will not install. Mepis and Mandriva install and only Mandriva will boot with windows.

I really like Mepis, and really don't like Mandriva, but I need windows. ANy ideas??

i put mepis on my other system and trash fedora 5. i liked it but i found it too breakable
