Latest GPL Buzz

This particular blog entry will not be allowed to be replied to and it will not be long. I feel that something needs to be said since Warren does not want to say it. Most everybody, including the author of the newsforge article, is missing the point. MEPIS was contacted by the FSF and the offical stance of how the source needs to be distributed is as follows: "Any and all Linux distros/builds disseminated via the Internet are required to mirror the source code ..." This means we can't just give someone a CD or DVD when they request it. It means we need to make several Gigs of data available over the Internet. We feel that this can be a large stumbling block for many smaller distros that do not have the resources to supply the extra hard drive space and bandwidth to accomidate the extra source.

MEPIS is not trying to get out of supplying the source. We want to and will comply with the GPL. Since we were unaware of the "mirror" policy that the FSF is seeming to want to enforce we wanted to let it be known to the other distros that may not have known either.
