Gimp doesn't work
Posts: 27
Please excuse my bad English- I have difficulties to find the right expressions. But let's try it.
I turned back from Kubuntu after 1 year leaving Mepis, It seemed to me, that Kubuntu would be more up to date. But at last I had some troubles with Kubuntu 6.06 esp. on OOo, i couldn't solve. Some days ago I tried to install on a friends computer one of the newest Linux OS. He had some extraordinary technic like "radio"-mouse ?, NVidia and so on. No Kanotix, no knoppix no Kubuntu worked well. First Suse 10.1 was working as Live-CD, but I was not able to install. Only Mepis runs at the first time!
Remembering this I Yesterday installed Mepis on my Computer.
I feel fine with Mepis 6.0 and hope the coming release will fix the following problems I will try to explain.
(nearly) All works fine. Krusader crashes very often when its looking on my home. Gimp doesn't work at all. When I start Gimp starting stops when reading xsane.... I can find in the Process table the started Gimp and xsane, as much as I I started Gimp.

p.s.
I hope I could find some people to speak my native language German.

Gimp does'nt work

Have you tried kooka does it work? I have a board that i cant get either one to work on.
It seems to be a machine specific problem , chipset implementation or maybe bios???? I cant find any log files that mention the problem but the kooka icon just bounces a while and quits , i notice cpu usage goes way up when these programs are initiated, logging out & back in stops excess cpu usage & alls normal. Gimp dies on xscanimage.
I used the install disk on 2 other rigs with no problems all works fine so ..... It would appear hardware related or compatibility.

Hi Jon,
Motherboard Asrock K8Upgrade-760GX
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
750 MB RAM
1 HD 60 GB.
In this beginning I do'nt want to scan with GIMP, but starting Gimp it stops in the Moment when it shows:
"Quering new Plug-Ins scanimage"
I was quite inaccurate in describing the last.
I have a scanner Epson Perfection 2480. Later I want to use it. Earlier I had a HP deskscan 4c, SCSII, it worked at once when I switched it to the Computer, but only with Mepis (SphinxOS) But sadly its broken.
Thanks Albrecht

Gutentag Albrecht,
Leider spreche ich nur ein bisschen Deutsch, aber du könntest diesen Link versuchen, wo jemand einen workaround gefunden hat: http://www.mepislovers.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=16479&forum=34
Viel Erfolg!
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

I had the same problem

If you uninstall kooka with kpackage or apt-get remove kooka that should get Gimp working.
I have not had this problem before the recent releases of Mepis so I'm hoping that it gets sorted before I need to do any scanning.
Not that it matters at the moment as I've given my scanner to my wife as her old one died !!!!!

No Jim, I don't believe so. I tried a lot of Linux OS on the same hardware, but this time Mepis is the first, where Gimp doesn't start.

To German - yep - I could only get gimp to work by uninstalling xsane. (also, please consider, there are enough "games" out there that it would be just fine to leave that silly vector xarala the heck out of there.)

We must have diffrent problems as kooka works with the live cd but not when installed. Did kooka work for you?
jim |edit| Well i just solved my problem with kooka by loading the live cd & deleting /etc/sane.d folder and copying the folder from the live cd to hda1 . Presto kooka works , Unfortunately TDK's work arounds didnt work for me . I allso removed kooka and sane till gimp was installed and working. Didnt find out exactly what the problem was but it works.
edit;;addendum;; programs start but cant find scsnner, its there but its not-there and i dont have a clue why it doesnt work....

Fixing HOLDUP on xscanimage in GIMP solved
Posts: 475
The following will fix the Holdup on xscanimage in GIMP on MEPIS...
Remove xscanimage plugin from GIMP.
Located at /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins
Delete xscanimage. (you might need to end the process first in KSysGuard).
This should fix the GIMP Loading problem
NOTE: You must have root privelages to remove this plugin.
Click on the KStartMenu > System > File System > File Manager - Super User Mode. Will give you root privelages to remove xscanimage if you're logged in as a different user.
Sorry but if you want xscanimage you'll have to wait for a patch or something fixing the hold up. Or maybe do an independant search for xscanimage and use that plugin from www.gimp.org.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Sagitarius, welcome to Mepis. Sorry, I do not speak German
Can you please provide us with more information on your system? What type of computer (brand, model), how many hard drives and how much space, how much RAM? Since you are wanting to use the Gimp to scan, please give us some information on your printer/scanner.
With that, I'm sure someone will be able to help you
