Package Upgrade Applet
Posts: 42
The package upgrade applet (Apt Notify) in the taskbar shows the number of upgrades that are available, but I need to reload the package information in Synaptic (or apt-get update) in order to get it to show anything. I know why this is needed, but my question is what is the applet good for? If I am in Synaptic, I can see the packages that are needed, I do not need the applet. Unless the applet can do auto reloads (this is how it works on Ubuntu, right?) it does not seem needed. Kind of like those fish in the aquarium.
Clarification about Apt Notify

It alerts me when there is something to upgrade, but only after I reload the package list. It does not reload the package list for me. This is how it is suppose to work, right?
Thanks for the tip regarding the adept-notifier, I will take a look at that.

I have two machines running the latest rc and one it pops up when a update is available, on the other one it still has not said anything. Neither has had a update since right after the installs to get some codecs and stuff. I will watch and see if the both continue in the same paths.

It's supposed to show you the notifications without you doing an apt-get update (or reload in Synaptic). adept-notifier is part of adept package in case you want to test it.

Apt Notify count has changed

Simply Mepis 6.0-1
Hello all,
Yesterday I was thumbing through Sam's Simply Mepis Guide and read about updating packages. The number on the Apt Notify was 42. I went ahead and did as directed by going into Synaptic package manager, clicking on reload (whiled dialed up to modem), then after that, I clicked on "mark all upgrades", then clicked on "apply". You're probably all thinking, you didn't need to do that.....
Anyway, it said it had 42 packages to upgrade, and the estimated time to do this was like 1 day, 17 hours, then would switch to 7 hours, then 5 hours, etc. So, I thought, okay, I can handle 5 hours in the evening so I let it download. I checked on it frequently, and about 2 hours later I was disconnected. Long story short, I tried reconnecting to finish downloading, but got disconnected again. Now I only have 24 as the Apt Notify number.
Any suggestions. As you can see, I don't know exactly when to use reload packages. How often does one do it and does one do the entire package list? Using dial up makes it a slow process. Do I get the 42 back by inserting my DVD live disk and retrieving them from there? Edited to add, that after re reading, the notify is to let you know the amount of packages that are upgadeable or available. So, looks like I upgraded over half of the 42 I had yesterday, and have 24 that are still available for upgrade. Right?
Thanks for your time!
Lisa

I take it that was the first update you have done. I say that because of the amount of files. The normal updates average 2-5 files is all, the first update is always a bear. A lot of updates may be recent ones that are not on the dvd. Security changes are fast and furious at times.

Hi Lisa:
Not worth the bother. Most updates to packages are minor and not even worth bothering with. If everything is working fine with your system then don't bother, on the otherhand if you are having problems with a certain package and there is an update available for that package then you can just pick that particular package to update. Most do the upgrade because they want to be on the bleeding edge of things but not necessary. It is also possible for an upgrade to a package to cause problems where none existed before so since you have dialup stick with what you have. In windose most of their updates are security related to keep ahead of the virus writers but viruses in linux aren't a problem anyway.

It was my first all out upgrade since installing 6.0-1

Well, I went after the updates again, mainly because I'd already started and I would get a pop asking me that some of the packages weren't upgraded, and the current settings, (or something to that wording) would not take affect. Now, I have zero in the applet. Wow!
I had an inside feeling that what you said was the case. I kept thinking while walking the dogs, "If it ain't broke, don't upgrade it".
Thanks for the valuable information Wayne! I appreciate it!

After a day's passing, the upgrades have proved useful for me. Firefox was upgraded, and surfing is faster for some reason. Also, I am able to now view and listen to DVD's I've recorded off of our DVD player/recorder (CyberHome), using Mplayer. Inspite of the previous help from the informative and helpful folks here on the latter, I still wasn't able to watch these disks. I'm pleased!
I also would have never tried Xara Xtreme, but I fiddled with it yesterday and drew some amazing pictures.
Great packages! Thanks to all those that contribute these for the community!
P.S. Thank you Baldy! I forgot to thank you yesterday.
On a side note, I seem to be one of the few that enjoys the aquarium. Having attention problems, it seems to help having the moving objects there on the bottom of the screen. Strange, eh?
It notifies you when there

It notifies you when there are new packages to upgrade. If you check manually you don't need it, but if you don't than it's nice to have something that lets you know "hey, you have something to upgrade". I personally use adept-notifier that comes with adept.
