I have the same problem, and it's not with 3.5.4, it's with 3.5.3, and only under Mepis 6. It works fine under Slackware, Arch Linux, and Fedora Core 5.

I have just been starting it manually when I wanted it to run. It would be nice if it would start itself when scheduled.
