More on strange Modem stuff

Hi all,
Totally possesed and !@#$%^& by this problem.
Bit new to linux but I know everybody says "stay away from winmodems" but I'm fixing a shaky but ok Desktop
PC (700 mhz) for a friend who knows even less than me and I'v got the dammedest thing going on.
Installed Mepis 3.3 no probs. Kick off KPPP(Internet-Dial-upTool) and I even get my ISP for this part of the world with the correct phone number.
Config modem and it says /dev/modem, now , at this point if I try to conect, the thing runs (seemingly) like a dream.
It makes noises like a modem ,i.e. you can hear it dialing , all the usual hiss's etc.

It picks up the phone line (dial up)

It goes through "Dialing (number)"

It brings up "Logging on to network"

and there it sits until I get a "Timeout waiting for the PPP interface to come up"

I'v never had such a strange one and I know it will be obvious to someone out there so,please dont laugh to hard.

I thought it might have something to do with this http://www.mepis.org/node/5068
thread but I'v tried all this stuff to no avail.
I'v check all the /etc/ppp/ files.

I get an signal 15 ,which according to # man pppd is"the peer is not responding to the echo requests"

Been helped here before which I greatly appreciated, can anyone get me around this ?.

Much confooz
Please help

More on strange Modem stuff

I am getting the exact same problem here with Mepis 6.0 final.

The frustrating thing is the winmodem worked fine with Mepis 3.4-3 which I've been using up until now (but now don't have anymore!)

Any ideas for things to try, anyone?

Thanks, Adrian

Eventually I 'solved' this by buying an external serial modem (can get them pretty cheap secondhand now on eBay or the like). This worked fine although I had to delete the winmodem, otherwise the speed of the external one was very slow. (Possibly an irq conflict or something, as winmodem was on COM3 and external on COM1.) Also set the speed using stty 115200

been there, done that

I am using an external modem. The other day I bought what looked like a newer one, worked with USB. Hooked it up and found it was for Broadband. In the process of trying to get it to work I ended up with that same 'timed out waiting. . . . yada yada yada.' Turned out that the commands for the modem, the script stuff had gotten erased. I loaded up the Live-CD, took a screen shot of what was supposed to be entered. Booted back to the copy of SimplyMepis on my harddrive and used the image I had saved to enter all the stuff back. Works like it used to now.

As far as the speed for external modems, I have found that if I set the modem at a low rate, it will connect at a higher speed. That could be an optical illusion, however.

Until I stopped everything from connecting behind my back, I couldn't even reach this website. I think it was snypatic or something like that. I also made sure ClamAV didn't automatically connect for updates.

Good luck. I hope you enjoy Mepis as much as I do, I keep forgetting to boot to my M$ partition and update the AV. I hardly never go there anymore.

Cheers,
