I'd like to see much fewer categories or forums.

Software
Hardware
Installation
Networking
etc

Max 5. Perhaps 7.

We can always fight over which, but a change is necessary.

It makes it easier and fun to follow the overall development of MEPIS.

Several years experience makes me feel, MEPIS is the best offer out there in MS, Linux and BSD for a general user. PC-BSD is close though.

How many forums?

We have a really large number, because I am slowly moving stuff around.
I have it subdivided because it reduces the number of posts asking the same thing.
Looking for a strange wireless card in "hardware" is a long search, but less under "wireless". So then the small number of people who answer the posts have less to answer, as the information is not so hard to find.
That's the theory.
It's not about beauty or simplicity.

I tend to read and sometimes reply

But on the occasions that I need to start a new thread I spend some time trying to workout where to put it.

Another thing, it would be REALLY handy if when you had finished a post to have a button that took you back to the place you had been, rather than trawling back with the back button.

Try Multiple Tabs

T Case, what I do when I connect to the forum is open separate tabs. So I have a tab for the main page of "Recent Posts". Then, if I want to read a particular thread, I right-click, Open In New Tab. If I choose to respond, I right-click on Reply and do the same thing. I can then write my stuff, preview and/or post the comment. When I'm done, all I have to do is close the tabs I'm not interested it, but the Recent Posts are still there. That way, I can go through all the new and updated items without loosing my place. At the end, I can do a "refresh" and/or get out Smiling

This works for Firefox and Konqueror (don't know about other browsers).

while were on the subject

What is the proper way to "get out" of the write & post situation? After i post comment i usually go to top of page & click on Forum Information or sutch to get back to open discussions . My first post was a quandry of how to get out of here ?

nearly ...

if you've a three button mouse, a middle click will open a new tab in firefox, and you can program what happens in Konqueror with the middle click - either a new window (yuk) or a new tab. I've got 16 tabs open here now, all opened from recent posts like Jon

Thanks liz but i have a one track mind . More than one probably is more than i can handle. If the way im doing it doesnt cause problems i will stick with it. On the other hand if its a problem causer dont hesitate to yell at me. Even old dogs can learn new tricks now and then. Eye-wink

An Idea for One-Track-Minders

Jim, here's an idea that might save you a little time without the "konfuzination" of tabs. In Firefox if you enter ctrl+h you will open a "history" list to the left. I don't believe there is an equivalent tool in Konqueror. In any case, you can order the history view "By Last Visited". So then go down however deeply. Need to pop up some? Just go down through the history to the location you want. What do you think?

same for Konqueror

but I can't recall the keystroke combo;
when you open your home directory in konqueror it is there, so you can choose history out of 10 tabs on the left. It's got a clock.
lots of konqueror's features are not on the toolbars, like splitting the window left right is Ctrl-Shift-L and splitting it vertically is Ctrl-Shift-T. If you hold down Ctrl-Shift and try any letter key you find all sorts of things

Ok Guys & gals

I will try your suggestions who knows i might like them better. I was in 3.3.1-1 Jon planted an idea about upgrades & i have been playing with it and my printer didnt print the page cause i know i will forget these little tricks without refrence. assuming i had fubard the setup i rebooted into 6rc3 and it still dont print. Cant remember it not printing these pages so dont know whats up with it. Good thing we finished the marathon today i have alittle mission of my own it seems.
Eye-wink I appreciate your feedback i had a feeling i was being a little dense with that approach but it seemed to work allright& was relatively quick, as opposed to the back button. The back button just didnt seem like a clean way to leave this reply page.

On another note it seems kinda quiet tonight i suppose you heard that theres a new 6.0 release probably ready by now to download. I was up late so i thought i would check it out after having a look here. Again thanks and lets have some fun with the new one.

I use the multiple tabs route

That still leaves you to refresh the view in the first tab to reflect the new situation.
The reason I bought the subject up is that one of the forums ? that I use has a return to thread button that deals with all of these annoyances, just wish I could remember which forum it is !!!
When I come across it again I'll try to remember to post a note back here (faint hope).
