Can see wireless card list but can't connect
Recently, I was helping out a friend with her Mepis 3.4.3 wireless. It appears that the install worked right away and I was able to connect to her home network's wireless.
When she took it outside, it was unable to connect to the the mobile hotspot. I took a look at kwifimanager and it can see a list of wireless but I couldn't selected it from the list (I am assuming that I can select from the list, perhaps the list of Wifi is just for read only?) I tried entering the ssid into the 4 config tabs, but that did not work.
Isn't there a way to the wireless to auto connect to the closest wifi. I think this is what she wanted. So far, I can't get it to do that.

Wireless

Read through my webpage http://home.kendra.com/tulip/mepis6
First set the ESSID to ANY to match "any" essid name.
Then use the kwifimanager to select the particular network you wish to connect with.
Next in the MEPIS OS center make sure the eth0 & eth1 & ath0 interfaces are all stopped, that was my solution.
The wlan0 tab needs to have two check boxes CHECKED YES start at boot up, start when plugged in. Also check USE DHCP for IP.
Now the wireless just automatically connects upon boot up.
Below is a list of console commands that might shed some light for your setup
open a console winow (terminal) konsole works fine
iwconfig
iwconfig wlan0 essid ANY channel 11
dhclient wlan0
