Automatix

This guy mentions automatix for mepis (version 6.0 only)
check this out because it offers lots of quick installs.
I'll be giving it a run myself.

Automatix

Automatix in the past has got ubuntu newbies started (including me, thanks!) however when using kubuntu 6.06 the computer multimedia setup is so easy automatix is best not used (it is a little unstable!?). This applies to Mephis 6.0. See link http://www.mepis.org/node/10668

Automatix installs and runs OK in Mepis. Lots of options.

Automatix

Hmmm if it's working fine then its application in spreading the use of mepis is excellent (I often help people install linux and the faster I can do the install the better). I still think synaptic and the manipulation of the source list should be learnt since it is not hard. I will try it in mepis 6.0.

I installed it last night and it seemed to run ok, so far I have used Swiftfox and I really see no need for Swiftfox if it is faster than Firefox it's hard to say and Mplayer works ok, it was working fine before I installed Automatix, but I also intalled K9Copy and I'm happy to say I have now done my first successful DVD movie(Ice Age) copy using Linux. Smiling I highly recommend installing Automatix after a new install of 6.0 it will have your multimedia working in no time and with little effort on your part and one more reason not to boot windows.

Bad Dog

No Mepis.org?

Support:

Support is not a problem at all in MEPIS, people at mepislovers.com forum are very friendly and helpful to users of MEPIS, or if you want a live help, you could always turn to the IRC channel #mepis in server “irc.freenode.net”.

OK, I liked the article, and he has lots of nice screen shots. And I too will give Automatix a try, but he doesn't even mention mepis.org.

Yes, the gang at mepislovers.com are helpful, but what are we stuffed penguins?

You need to add a repo...

To have Automatix show up in Synaptic/Kpackage/apt-get you need to add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

# Automatix Repositories #
deb http://www.beerorkid.com/automatix/apt mepis main

automatix

which sounds like it comes from an Asterix book
is busy installing lots of stuff on my new install of 6.0
as i'm not in the US I didn't have to worry too much about the copyright warnings that come up on install.
if this system really does work well, we will talk with warren about a link on the desktop to take newbies straight to this site and adding the repositories direct to /etc/sources.list

3D Desktop for Mepis

Somebody known something about 3D Desktop for Mepis?
I like KDE, I am just curious about it.

You talkin about

3D desktop

Thank's you it's right in the target !!!

It did work really well. Run Automatix after the installation and select whatever suits you. Just don't select all of them - that would be serious overkill....Smiling

I revised my entry in sources.list:

# Automatix Repositories #
deb http://www.getautomatix.com/apt mepis main

I'm not sure if the recent close-down of Cipherfunk does affect the Automatix-script...

Automatix Repositories

When I put,
www.getautomatix.com/apt/mepis/main
in my browser I get,
"Error 404: NOT FOUND!
Your browser cannot find the document corresponding to the URL you typed in."

So something is wrong for sure. Sad

Not in your Browser.......!

Hi,
The correct way is not in your Browser (it does not work), but by modifying your /etc/apt/sources.list

#Open a terminal.
#Type:
cd /etc/apt
#Make a backup file first and then change the file sources.list
cp sources.list sources.list-backup
kdesu kwrite sources.list

#Add these 2 lines:

# Automatix Repositories #
deb http://www.getautomatix.com/apt mepis main

# in your /etc/apt/sources.list file and save it

Then type:
apt-get update
apt-get install automatix

After installing Automatix close the terminal.

You can now run Automatix using:
K-menu Run Command (type in automatix) or
K-menu -> System -> Graphical Installer Script for Mepis (Automatix-Mepis6).

Don't install everything. That's serious overkill.

Worked like a charm

Thanks Ko Bros. Instructions like that really help the people that are (very) new too Linux. MEPIS is a very good Distro, I have everything working - even my printer and DVD player!! Many thanks to you and Jon and all the people that have helped. Smiling

Hi I too tried out Automatix

Hi
I too tried out Automatix last night, have been using the cli for a long time and I thought I would check out the GUI capabilities of Mepis. It is definitely a fantastic distro and Automatix is a very good script for newbies.
