Why isn't wlan0 listed by iwconfig?
Mepis 3.4.3
Can someone explain wlan0 to me?
Where does it come from?
It isn't listed when I iwconfig (just lo,eth0,ppp0).
Does Guarddog have anything to do with this?
Is this something that is just not available on this amd3100 machine?
I've been trying to set up a linksys wusb54gs with ndiswrapper using all the instructions I can find.
ndiswrapper -l shows driver and device present.
Thanks for any help.

RE:Why isn't wlan0 listed by iwconfig?
You've apparently created a wrapper for your Windows driver of wusb54gs, but you haven't loaded it or informed modultils.
As root, you next steps should be
modeprobe yourdrivernames (as listed by ndiswrapper)
If your wireless light comes on then you've created the wlan0 device (IF that is the device your wireless chip creates. It could be ath0 or sth0 ... )
As root,
iwlist scanning
will show you what is what.
Then, if iwlist shows you a wireless device, you can use Mepis OS Center (now called Mepis Utilities) to configure your wireless. When you get a connection you can open a root console and issue
ndiswrapper -m
to load modutils so that your wireless will load automatically at the next boot.

thanks for replying.
You've answered my question saying that wlan0 is to be created by my wireless device so I won't try anymore to find it somewhere in this machine.
I've already done the modprobe and ndiswrapper -m
There was a message indicating alias wlan0.
Maybe better to give up on this and stick to winxp side for this application.
WUSB54GS version
What is version of your wireless WUSB54GS?
You need to find the chipset -- Broadcom or Ralink
What is output of lspci -vv
Mike
It's broadcom Tried as
It's broadcom
Tried as root:
sh-3.1# ispci -w
sh: ispci: command not found
The command is lower
The command is lower case(LSPCI), not lower case(ISPCI)
It's also two v's not one w
They look so similar in common screen fonts that that catches a lot of people

Not sure what to look for - this is only part of long list referring to wireless I can see:

lspci -vv output
bilzer,
Look for a line like:
Network controller: Broadcom Corpo...
Mine is a Broadcom 4318 and requires special ndiswrapper configuration. Ubuntu and Mepis install an open source driver that unfortunately dosen't directly work for this hardware.
lspci -vv doesn't show any
lspci -vv doesn't show any line like that.
I re-did the ndiswrapper using WUSB54GSv2.inf
moved rndismpk.sys and usb8023k.sys to /etc/ndiswrapper/wusb54gsv2
and again the ndiswrapper -l shows driver and device present,
did ndiswrapper -m
did the modprobe
and lspci -vv doesnt show any line like that,
AND when I do ndiswrapper -l the console freezes.
Makes no difference to logoff-logon.
