Cannot get a screen saver to start/run in Mepis 6.
Selecting a screen saver and then testing,savers run ok.
Set the time interval,apply,ok,exit...........wait all day if you like ,nothing happens.

Until about 2 weeks ago, the screen saver in my Mepis 6.0 was working and then it stopped coming on. The test in the control panel works. I did some package upgrades about the time I noticed that the screen saver stopped working. This is the only thing that I have done that I can think of that could have caused it to stop working. Could this be a factor?
I have read your comments, but don't fully understand your instructions. Would using your suggestions possibly solve my problem? I have downloaded the tar file 42637-kdesktop_3.5.3-Oubuntu0.2_FIX_i386 to my desktop and can go not further since the rest of your instructions are unclear. I am new to linux and need more detail such as unzipping this file. Should I extract to my desktop and then click on it? When I click the tar file and click usr and the lib, libkdeinit_kdesktop.so is already there. I am confused. Can you clear these steps up for me? Thank you.

I am going to answer my own preceeding question. After thinking about John's suggested fix and playing with my system over several days, I finally figured out what his instructions were saying and was finally able to work thru the several steps that he gave. My screen saver is now automatically starting as it should!
I guess I was afraid that I would trash my system if I made a mistake. The GUI of Mepis is really very intuitive and makes each step rather clear about where you are and uses pop-ups and other notes that help steer you from trouble. I am learning that in working with Linux that you just have to bite the bullet and do what you have to do. I'll probably never know why my screen saver stopped working, but at least I got my problem resolved. Thanks.

In my case I found it was not Mepis but a bug in kde 3.5.
Screensavers were okay in previous releases.
If you wish to try this go in Root first and back up this file libkdeinit_kdesktop.so found in root/user/lib in case this does not work for you.
Go to: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=42637&PHPSESSID=c09609f04b0207cc30ee70bae78fca9c
and download file 42637-kdesktop_3.5.3-0ubuntu0.2_FIX_i386.
After downloaded I clicked on 42637-kdesktop_3.5.3-0ubuntu0.2_FIX_i386 file then on user then click on lib folder copy libkdeinit_kdesktop.so within this folder.
Now go to root/user/lib and paste libkdeinit_kdesktop.so it will ask you to overwrite file this is okay.
After you have done this reboot computer and try screensaver again in user mode and it should be okay.
