New user needs advice

Hi, I'm impressed by Mepis and already love it, but I have a problem. I have no sound from the system. My card (integrated SiS is recognized, and I have good sound from an audio CD, but nothing from the PC or mpeg clip for example. With skype, no sound but the other one can hear me. ???
I look at Kmix and try near anything but... Help: Is there someone with an idea for me ? Thanx

A couple of options:
E.g. in kaffeine, change the sound system from ALSA to OSS, see if that helps.
In a konsole, run alsamixer to pump up volumes
Does your KDE sound system work (in system settings, sound and multimedia). What if you set it to use OSS?
Do these checks and pot back the results.
