Help! my screensaver does not work

hi,
just moved to mepis, i really like it. But my screnensaver won't start automatically. I right-clicked the desktop, went to configuration and set the screensaver to start automatically after five minutes. But it doesn't. What can be wrong? This always worked with other linux distributions.

Help! my screensaver does not work

Hi what version of Mepis are you using if it is the final version 6.0 there is a bug in kde 3.5 that may be causing problem was okay in previous releases.I have posted this already this is what I did and has worked on 2 computers now with no problems. If a different version of Mepis maybe someone else can help you.

If you wish to try this go in Root first and back up this file libkdeinit_kdesktop.so found in root/user/lib in case this does not work for you.
Go to: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=42637&PHPSESSID=c09609f04b0207cc30ee70bae78fca9c
and download file 42637-kdesktop_3.5.3-0ubuntu0.2_FIX_i386.
After downloaded I clicked on 42637-kdesktop_3.5.3-0ubuntu0.2_FIX_i386 file then on user then click on lib folder right click and copy libkdeinit_kdesktop.so within this folder.
Now go to root/user/lib and right click paste libkdeinit_kdesktop.so it will ask you to overwrite file this is okay.
After you have done this reboot computer and try screensaver again in user mode and it should be okay.

Thanks, John, that did the trick! This KDE bug was the problem, I fixed it on my machine and on the one of my mother-in-law, and both are working now. Thanks a lot!

Screensaver KDE3.5

Fix submitted by JoHn-M
Worked right away for me. Nifty as I tried the Ubuntu fix using the command line and no -go as directories might be placed different than the Mepis 6.0 version.Congrat John as this shows very practical way anyone can understand without using a 10 page crypto so common in the Lino world Thanks again

copy function not working

When I right click on the libkdeinit_kdesktop.so within this folder, I do not get a copy option. Why or what else should I try?

copy function not working

Try it with file manager superuser mode or use live cd logged in as root through file system services , the bottom star icon is services storage media in the directory tree.

Help! my screensaver does not work also

I am trying to follow these instructions for screensaver fix, how do you go to root/user/lib? All I get is: root@4[helge]# root/user/lib
bash: root/user/lib: No such file or directory

Help! my screensaver.........

Hi Helge,
Instead of logging in user mode log in as root then click on house icon which should be in taskbar at bottom (konqueror) then click on red folder on the left it should show it as root folder then click on folders as above instructions.
Then after you have finished log out of root restart computer then go back into user mode and fix should be okay.

Solution leads to problem

Hi,

I used your instruction on one machine (Mepis 6) and it worked great. Thanks!

Encouraged by this, I did the same on a second machine (Mepis 6.0 rc2) and I have a problem I don't know how to solve.

As soon as I copied the
libkdeinit_kdesktop.so file in /usr/lib as root a few things happened:

1- My desktop background changed to the login/logout screen, hiding the screen icons. I know they are still there as I tried to add a new shortcut to the desktop and it asked me if I wanted to overwrite the current one (I said yes, but it still didn't show).
I tried changing the background to different images, but it keeps that login/logout screen as background.
2- The right mouse button doesn't work.
3- Everything else seems to work properly.

Any suggestion as to how to correct this would be greatly appreciated -
please don't tell me that I have to reinstall Mepis Smiling

Thanks

copy function problem

Thanks for your response John, instructions are clearer for me now. However when I try to copy libkdeinit_kdesktop.so I do not get a copy function when I right click and I do any other time I need to copy something. Last week James replied to my post regarding this but I it was over my head. What can I do?

nic masson: Does Mepis 6.0

nic masson: Does Mepis 6.0 rc2 use KDE 3.5.3? The patch is only intended to be applied to that version of KDE.

kde version

Yes, it's KDE 3.5.3

What do you recommend next?

copy function problem

Hi Helge,
Your copy function not working I have not had this problem are you sure you are logged in as root if you are maybe start a new forum thread about copy function not working.
You could try this though where the new libkdeinit_kdesktop.so is click on it with mouse so its highlighted and hold click down now this is tricky then drag file to root/user/lib then release mouse click you should get a box with move here click on this if old file has not been deleted yet it will ask you to overwrite file this is okay.

solution to problem

Try logging in to root xwindows system. IE log out of normal user session and logging back in as root & and go to the /usr/lib/libkdeinit_kdesktop.so file right click it and select rename and do so to something like libkdeinit_kdesktop.so.old . Once renamed the system shouldnt be so persistent about protecting it.Then try the copy and paste routine again. It might help to download the file again as root also to preserve permissions. Give that a try and let me know how it goes.

success at last

Thanks John and James for your replies. All I did was drag the new file to usr/lib and allowed it to overwrite as suggested. Then logged in as user and tried it out and now the screensaver is working, thanks again.

Was it the exact version kdebase_3.5.3-0ubuntu0.2?

Have you rebooted to see if that makes a difference?

When I applied that patch, I first made a backup of the two files /usr/bin/kdesktop_lock and /usr/lib/libkdeinit_kdesktop.so, so that I could revert if needed. The patch worked ok for me, so I didn't need the backup files.

I could give you my backup of those files, if you want to try restoring them.

Here is a weird one...

I am using MEPIS32 Beta 4.

When I choose an OpenGL screen saver it works up to 9 minutes. When I choose anything over a 9 minute delay all it goes to is a black screen. I have no clue why.

I'm not even sure if I needed to follow the steps in this thread but I did with no change.

I haven't tried other screen savers outside of the OpenGL.

Thanks for any insight.

The version is

The version is :
42637-kdesktop_3.5.3-0ubuntu0.2

Booting makes no difference.

Funny thing - I booted as root. Everything worked fine. Then (as root) I copied again /usr/lib/libkdeinit_kdesktop.so (don't ask me why) and the same problem happened! Now the root desktop background is frozen, the icons have dissapeared and the left mouse button doesn't work.

However reading your post, you talk about /usr/bin/kdesktop_lock and that you have a copy of it. You didn't mention anything about it in your earlier posts. Should this file be also copied?

Thanks

re:The Version is

Hi Nic,
I did not have your problem but if you had backed up copy of old libkdeinit_kdesktop.so before doing fix as I did say to do you could boot up with live cd in root go to your root on hard drive and overwrite with your old libkdeinit_kdesktop.so and restart your computer at least then should be back to normal login.

John

thanks john

I tried your suggestion with no change. Maybe something specific to my setup.

Anyways, I will reinstall Mepis 6.0 :_(

Thanks you very much for your help

both

The patch contains two files: /usr/bin/kdesktop_lock and /usr/lib/libkdeinit_kdesktop.so. Both of them should be copied.
