Laptop getting too hot

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FJ58GP laptop and have just installed simply Mepis on it.
I have noticed that even when I don't have any programs running it gets very hot and the fan is constantly going on and off, Is this normal? I am new to linux so please explain things throughly.

first try this

When the lapto is on AC power, the default setting for Kpowersave is 'performance'. Right click the plug / battery icon and set schem to powersave. Now check if the temp goes back, and if CPU throttles. For that last bit, click the battery icon and see what the Kpowersave status window says.

If the CPU throttles and temp drops, tell us here, so we can give you instructions on how to make powersave permanent.

I can't seem to find a battery icon, I found kpowersave under the kde menu, but when I tryed to open it nothing happened. Any ideas, I'm really stuck

RE:Laptop getting too hot

Are you keeping your laptop air vents open and unobstructed so the fan can push the hot air out of the case? That can be a problem if you have the laptop in your lap, or it doesn't have enough space between the tabletop and the bottom of the laptop because the 'feet' are a tad too short.

I use a cheap, foldable plastic laptop supporter which always keeps sufficient space underneath the laptop.

The laptop seems to have

The laptop seems to have enough ventalation, I never had this problem before, that's why I thought it might be something to do with simplymepis, if I could open kpowersave maybe I could fix it but nothing seems to happen when I click on the icon.

start from konsole

open a konsole and enter 'kpowersave' and enter. what does it say?

after 14 days its seems as if he may have given up on mepis or linux (hope not) this is a pretty easy one i have put mepis on about 5 diff laptops and on 2 of them i had to upgrade packages throught synaptic(alt+f2 type synaptic then root password search package name r-click install or upgrade click mark to get dependencies click apply wait click close and reboot) its different on every box but the basics are the same you need to ensure that throttling(SpeedStep, Powernow!) is working you can use cpudyn, powernowd, cpufreqd or powersaved sometimes if one doesn't work another one will powersaved is easier to use so try updating it first also try searching ubuntu forums you may find a working fix there after its working you can set a dynamic cpu policy irecomend using ksensors too so you have more indication of whats going on than your fan moo'ing

I haven't given up

Sorry I haven't replied, I haven't been able to access my computer for a while but have it back now. I tried typing kpowersave in the terminal but this is what it said:

kbuildsycoca running...
This machine does not support ACPI, close KPowersave now.
DCOP aborting (delayed) call from 'anonymous - 6774' to 'kpowersave'
ERROR: Communication problem with kpowersave, it probably crashed

it says that kpower save is installed when I check in synaptic
but I can't seem to access SpeedStep and Powernow!

Any help would be much appreciated, I promise this time I will be able to reply a lot earlier.
