Where oh where has my DVD-CD drive gone?

I have been having a laptop problem after installing Mepis 6.0. I can
boot to either Mepis or Win XP home but neither OS "sees" my DVD/CD
drive anymore.

It still shows up in POST and BIOS. It is as though the volume is no
longer being mounted. I can still boot from the DVD/CD drive, but if I
boot from the hard drive, the DVD/CD drive cannot access files since
it is not being picked up by either OS.

When Mepis begins to boot, the following appears on the screen:

PCI: BIOS BUG #81[49435024] found
ata2: disabling port

If I use the windows recover module to fix the MBR, Windows sees the
DVD/CD drive again, but then I am stuck with just Windows. If I use
Mepis as a live CD, Mepis recognizes the DVD/CD drive just fine.

If I swap the DVD/CD drive for a second internal hard drive, the
results are the same.

I have been installing GRUB to the MBR (default on the Mepis
installer). I have one XP NTFS partition and two (main and swap) Linux
partitions.

POST shows both HDDs or HDD and DVD drive detected.
DVD drive or HDD2 are not visible. to either Linux or XP.
They are not being mounted.

If computer boots from DVD drive, all is well. Drive works fine.

Any ideas?

Bios bug

PCI: BIOS BUG #81[49435024] found
ata2: disabling port

Looks like you need a bios update or to research this little bit of info on the web to see what ita all about. I would check the makers site for info on this cause who knows what its referring to. Or use the output info in a web search?????

Where oh where has my DVD-CD drive gone?

Jim,

Thank you for your comment. I called Sager and they are looking into the problem. I did a net search and came up with some hits that indicate to me that it is a BIOS problem. The BIOS is dated May 2006 right now. The chassis of this Sager laptop is made by Clevo.

I have not tried installing GRUB to the root partition rather than to the MBR. I don't know if that is a viable workaround until the BIOS can be upgraded by Clevo or Sager. I am also not sure if installing GRUB that way would result in awkward bootup or not.

Any other ideas would be welcome.

Where oh where has my DVD-CD drive gone?

One thing I forgot to mention. With only XP installed and booting the Mepis 6.0 live CD, I get the line:
PCI: BIOS BUG #81[49435024] found
as the first line on the screen. However, I do not get the line:
ata2: disabling port
following it. With the live CD running, I can locate the CD drive. This makes sense since I booted Mepis from it.

So, perhaps the BIOS error does not matter at all. The ata2 port being disabled may be preventing whatever device attached to it from being mounted. Does this make sense?

Der Alte the only thing to work around this that i can think of is possibly on that second ide channel there is a bios setting like auto that you may be able to change to irq 15 or point it to an available free irq manually. Its highly unlikely but might be worth a look, laptops have some strange (to me) quirks and setups and i am by no means an authority in regards to them.
Probably the best suggestion i have is to drop Warren and crew a line at maybe the wizzards have an idea whats going on. Other than that maybe comparing notes between the live cd hardware setup and the hdd install will provide a clue.
I friend bought a sony viao a few years back that had allmost every thing in xp using irq9 how they pulled that off i still dont know or why that was needed is a mystery to me. Allso after calling sony they said it was normal???
If youre up on bios settings there may be others to try.
Good luck!

Where oh where has my DVD-CD drive gone?

Jim,

Thanks for the ideas. I think I will make a comparison between the live CD and the hdd install as you suggested and send it to the Mepis wizards. Tech support at Sager who provide the Clevo chassis are stumped so far. They don't seem to be all that dedicated to Linux.

Thanks again, I'll keep trying and post a solution someday, I hope Smiling

Me too...but it's SUSE 10.1 on Rock XCTX

Der Alte,

I have exactly the same problem with a Clevo based Rock XCTX laptop (spec here)

http://www.rockdirect.com/notebooks/xtremectx_cons.htm

with T2600 core duo processor and nVidia 7900 GTX 256MB graphics.

Also, I've got a GRUB-based dual boot of Windows XP Home and SUSE 10.1 instead of Mepis...here's my dmesg output:

Hope that gives you, the Mepis team and Clevo techies something to work with.

Let me know if there's any other info that I could give that would be useful.

Meanwhile, I've raised a thread on the Rock forum ( www.rockforum.co.uk ) that references this one:

Im wondering if either of you have a floppy drive . I have an idea but you have to have a flopp drive.

jim

IndigoBoy, Your dmesg looks

IndigoBoy,

Your dmesg looks very similar to mine when I had installed SuSE 10.0. I tried Mepis 6.0 after that.

You show the Bios bug #81 and the ata2 disabling port in your file. I don't have my SuSE dmesg.

My Mepis dmesg file shows

PCI: BIOS BUG #81[49435024] found
instead of
PCI: BIOS BUG #81[00000000] found
in your SuSE 10.1 file.

You have the Clevo 570U chassis as I do.

I will pass your post along to the Sager tech people. Maybe it will help both of us.

Jim,

I don't have a floppy drive to work with but perhaps IndigoBoy does.

Jim, I don't have a floppy

Well it still may work but you will have to install grub to MBR and fix it again if it doesnt work. Boot er up with the live cd and log in as root root in gui. Go to the Mepis utilities under system administration and reinstall grub bootloader. The big diffrence this time is reinstall grub with initrd it says for experts only next to the little squars box that has to be checked. Install it to mbr then close the pane then go back and open it again check the box again and tic install to root it should respond with grub installed ok in both instances . My idea is that an initrd boot may give the system time to make a node for the other channel since you will be using it while running live, allso it should be im thinking in the initrd image. Dont know for sure but i think its worth a try, i think you have that fixmbr down by now.Smiling
Good luck! jim

Further info

Sorry guys, I don't have a floppy either.

Out of interest, Der Alte, what make of combo DVD/CD-ROM do you have on your Sager ?

Mine's a Sony DVD RW DW-Q520A and I couldn't find it anywhere on the SUSE compatible hardware list

http://cdb.suse.de/?LANG=en_US

......maybe it's too new ?

Another pointer to hardware compatibility problems is that I tried to boot up using a Knoppix Live CD, as suggested here:

http://tomshardware.co.uk/2004/03/29/migrating_from_windows_to_linux/page3.html

....and it just shut down half way through the boot cycle.

Also, I'd really appreciate a quick pointer towards how to fix the MBR so that I could go back to Windows with a working DVD.

I do understand that I'd lose the dual-boot capability, but SUSE's easy to reinstall if this problem gets resolved.

Thanks,

IndigoBoy

Jim, I'll give it a try.

Jim,

I'll give it a try. Sager is now going to consult with Taiwan, presumeably Clevo as to what the problem might be.

They said:

We suspect the contact between the CD-ROM
drive and the connector on the motherboard may caused the problem. We do not have solid proof yet.
We will forward this case to the engineer in Taiwan
for help.

I replied:

If it may be a problem with the contact between the CD-ROM drive and the connector on the motherboard, why is everything working fine right now with only Windows installed or even while running the Mepis live CD?

I think I'll try your suggestion, Jim.

Thanks for your help.

To fix the MBR, boot up with your Windows disk and choose
R to go to the Restore Console.

Then type fixmbr
Then type fixboot
Then remove your Windows disk
Then reboot and you will be in Windows and your drive
will appear. Unfortunately, you are stuck in the squalid world of Windows.

Hope this helps. Read my reply to Jim for the latest from Sager tech support.

Back to Windows......for now

Thanks Der Alte, for the rescue tips.

I'm going to go back to Windows this weekend just to prove that the DVD still works.

Also thinking about downloading the SUSE 10.1 Live CD image and booting it up to test the hardware compatibility.

I guess if it's anything like your experience with Mepis Live then the DVD should work OK.

I'll report back next week....

using the Windows loader

Consider using the Windows loader (ntlrd) for your boot menu. Use (free) bootpart, http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm, to set it up.

First make sure that your windows installation is working to your satisfaction, and that GRUB is installed on the Linux boot partition. At this point, Windows is blissfully unaware of Linux. Bootpart will then copy the GRUB loader file from the root partition to a file on the windows C drive and add a line to the Window boot menu in boot.ini.

This is the least intrusive (to Windows) way to put up a multi-boot menu on your PC.

"ata2: disabling port" still happens

Jim,

I did try your suggestion but no cigar. It seemed quite sensible to me but the computer wouldn't go for it. I have noticed that if I get the "PCI: BIOS BUG #81[49435024] found" but not the "ata2: disabling port", all is well. I don't know if the two are sometimes or always related but the "ata2: disabling port" seems to be the showstopper. The ata2 port being disabled may be preventing whatever
device attached to it from being mounted.

I wonder if there is a way of enabling the port after bootup. That might be a workaround. Sager is not being particularly helpful and I doubt I could get in contact with Clevo myself. I might try though.

When installed Mepis begins to boot, the following appears on the screen just as before:

PCI: BIOS BUG #81[49435024] found

ata2: disabling port

When Mepis live CD begins to boot, the following appears on the screen:

PCI: BIOS BUG #81[49435024] found

The ata2: disabling port does not appear.
With the live CD running, I can locate
the CD drive. This makes sense since I booted Mepis
from it.

I thank you for your help Jim and I'll keep plugging away at the problem. I'll try light9's idea next.

If you havent taken grub off yet try apic=off after pressing f3 and adding it to the grub boot string. May not work but who knows. I thought initrd had a good chance ....

Wayne did you try a diffrent kernel Warren has compiled several and it doesnt take too long to add another. Are you runnin a laptop too?

jim

Wayne i know youre not a newbie can you give some details about your hardware and when this started or has this been a continuing thing for some time? Things youve tried and what your take is would help. Other than the cdrom is it working allright, its kind of a strange error on a desktop . (for me anyway)

Mixed results

Tried a couple of Live CD distros with mixed results....

SUSE Linux 10.1 Live CD fails with the following error after loading the kernel:

init: Cannot find the CD I was booted from - doh !
(Need to mount this CD/DVD to /.CD.real)

So I have to conclude that SUSE 10.1 of any flavour and Clevo M57U based laptops do not mix.

However, I did successfully boot the kubuntu 6.06 Live CD with no problems at all.

A real mixed bag then...... Puzzled

Thats interesting im wondering if you installed kubuntu to drive , or if you plan to do so. Im courious as to the results.

Someone else with the same problem...

Hi Jim,

No plans to install kubuntu just yet, but will keep you posted if I do.

Incidentally, found another forum thread from somebody who's having exactly the same SUSE 10.1 Live CD error that I get:

http://mdlug.org/pipermail/mdlug/2006-July/011404.html

...except that he's attempting to boot it on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop......so it's not specific to Clevo-based machines then !!!

Someone else with the same problem...

hi,

I have the same problem as well as the same notebook (clevo), and I use Ubuntu.

(sorry for bad english)

I have found a soluton that give brings my drive to windows.

instead of grub I now use lilo on the mbr whitch directly boots Windows and grub on the boot part of my 3 partition,

I cant boot linux directly from lilo, because after some time of work the system (gnome) freeze, and the tty1-shell tell me:
error: ata2 is slow to reponse
(I really wondering about that because lilo use the same boot options as grub, and it would be interresting if anybody has the same problem)

anyway there are still problems with the dvd/cd drive left:
1. still no drive on linux, only on windows
2. sometimes windows has some burn problems

hope it (lilo) helps anyone

acpi

Hi there,

well i got my hands on a clevo m570u with bios 1.00.03 ...

I also had the problems that the dvd disappeared after the linux (SuSE 10.1) installation. But the booting from the drive is working !!

Well the workaround for SuSe was, to disable the acpi as the bios of the clevo barebone has some specialities for the controller and therefore causes some timeouts...

i used the grub option acpi=off and there you go.. the drive is up and running... btw. the harddrive is working without any option switch..

windows is another problem.. my tests showed up, when setting the windows partition active everything is running fine and the drives show up.

So my workaround is as follows:
1. change grub options with acpi=off
2. install another bootloader which only switches active partitions between linux and windows
3. wait for the next bios revision, which hopefully resolves the acpi issues.

So long,

Thorsten

Same issue windows 98 machine

I found your forum while researching the disappearance of both my cd and my dvd drives. It sounds like I have a similar issue on a pc desktop that was working fine last week.
Now, the drives power up during the post and open when the button is pressed but they do not run cd's and do not appear in My Computer. They are in device manager but only the cd drive reports it is working. The dvd has a ! and reports no driver.
I have deleted both in Device Manager and rebooted. It appears that windows sees both devices as new hardware and installs drivers, but the problem remains.
Any suggestions would save what little hair I have left at this point Smiling

@thorsten hi, thank you for

@thorsten

hi, thank you for the idea (acpi=off), but on my system (Ubuntu) I now can see the DVD device (scd0) but if I try to mount it the console freezes up, so it isnt helpfull

for your second point: try lilo

@BagelAnne

hi, your problem isnt like this one, but

some suggestions: 1. did you change some Devices (like HDD or DVD or CD) than check if the jumpers are right
2. is the information of the bootsplash correct, i mean is the device name right, if not check the cables (it is a simple idea but sometimes the simple things are the one we dont see first)

I have almost the exact same

I have almost the exact same problem on a M570U with Gentoo. Before I installed Grub my optical drive showed up perfectly, but after it's simply gone. The Gentoo live CD will boot fine, but after installing neither the optical drive or the second HDD will show up in Linux.

Now, I seem to have one major difference. The second HDD has no problems showing up in Windows. After much trial and error I've determined that if I pop the second HDD in and boot Windows, safely remove the second HDD via the tray icon, pop it out, pop the DVD in, go to device manager, right click the entry for the second HDD that USED to be there and click scan for changes, it recognizes my DVD again. However, as soon as I reboot it's gone.

I don't know what else to tell you. I haven't found any other solutions to any of the problems that this causes.

LILO

hi
did you try to use lilo instead of grub ?
