Before you get all excited about a 64 bit Mepis you might want to read this article. It is a really good read about the situation of 64 linux.

Thanks for the post Baldy,
I am wondering if MEPIS will see a dual core as 2 processors (like windows does) or 1 64-bit?

if the kernel is SMP enabled will see 2 processors, you can install the 2.6.15-26-k7 kernel for AMD and 2.6.15-26-686 for Intel processors.

I have a Pentium-D. Will installing the 2.6.15-26-686 for Intel processors make MEPIS see my dual core as 2 32-bit processors or as 1 64-bit?

Sam have you checked your BIOS? Will your BIOS support two CPU's? Check and let me know. Then I will help you install the SMP kernel.

Ok, so start Synaptic and click reload then do a search for 2.6.15-26-686 and check every thing that apply's, I have the Linux kernel image, Linux kernel header, Linux restricted modules and what ever else you think you may need, synaptic may add a package or two, no worry. Click apply and let it install, you may get some warning, that is common so don't let it stop the install and the package intel536ep modules may not install again no worry, just un-tick the box because it's not gong to install and I have never needed that module any ways. Ok, the installation is now done, the next thing to do is up-date grub so you can boot to your new kernel, it's easy, just start the konsole, type:su and enter the password, next type:update-grub. That will update your grub menu, later you can edit it so it will look the way you want. Your done you can now boot to your new kernel.
If you have any problem at all you will still be able to boot to your old kerner.
If somebody has a better way to do this, please post, as I'm no expert.
regards,
Jimmy
