Write Japanese (and maybe Korean, and Chinese) on Mepis 6

I was more than one year, far away from Mepis.
The main reason was the impossibility, to write Japanese under English environment. (even if in the old times I found a solution: see http://www.mepis.org/node/5638).
Today I'm back testing Mepis 6... with the same old boring problem. After searching here and there, I made my way to write Japanese again.
Maybe, making the respective changes, can work also with Chinese, Korean or other languages.

(Remember to to install your system local as UTF-8 on the step number 7a)

1- Install (with Synaptic!)

    language-selector-common
    language-selector
    language-selector-common-qt

Installing those applications from the command line (apt-get install) something goes wrong. I tested also installing only language-selector or language-selector-common-qt alone: openoffice fails to accept Japanese input.

2- Close Synaptic!

3- Follow the guide for Kubuntu, steps 1 and 2
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM/Kubuntu?action=show

(You must follow the details in the the Adept window, and answer the questions)

Oops! That fails to install skim(??), so:

3- install skim (I prefer to do it from the console, as root):

  apt-get install skim

4- Logout, restart X (ctrl+alt+backspace)

5- Login, start skim (from utilities menu)

6- Kubuntu guide, step 4

7- From the console, type

mkdir .xinput.d

cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim-anthy ~/.xinput.d/default

8- This make possible to write on qt applications:

apt-get install scim-qtimm

9- Oops! wired dccop error, so as root type

  mv /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90im-switch /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98im-switch

大成功でした!

Jalosxal Can you tell me -

Jalosxal

Can you tell me - Does this method of scim installation...
1. interfere with kaffeine functionality??
2. enable J input on Open office, k-mail etc??
(edit - on re-read I notice you seem to say OpenOffice is OK!! - yippee!! - I've been hassled by that issue for some time)

Reason I asked is I just discovered - after removing my old scim install incl. 'custom startscim' file in /etc/X11/Xsession.d - that my previously non-functioning Kaffeine has miraculously come back to life??

Does this have something to do with the change from 90 to 98 in the start sequence you mentioned above?

Thanks for your work and posts re scim by the way - I'm sure your older method worked fine for me in SM3.4.3 and quite a few people refered to it!! - but alas no go (for me at least) in SM6.0??

I have posted my J input hassles on mepislovers but noone watching apparently - if you want more background.

Ta - dukey.

Gotta luv Mepis. GREAT work team.
Wish list = perfect Japanese input!! and Flash player!!

Almost there - but no go for O-O

OK Jaloxsal - trying to repeat your success - いいです!!
as you can see - so far so good.
Got to step 7 - couple of questions???

1. No package called language-selector-common-qt listed in my synaptic >> installed language-selector-qt instead ??

2. Where exactly do I create '.xinput.d' directory? I assumed at root/ or should it be under /home/'user'/ directory??

anyway - next command (cp /etc/....) gave me this error...
'cp: target `/root/.xinput.d/' is not a directory: No such file or directory'

So... I manually copied scim-anthy into BOTH 'root/.xinput.d/' AND '/home/user/.xinput.d/'.

Now I have J input in everything but OpenOffice. Puzzled

Kate; Kontact; terminal; Firefox; Nvu; even synaptic - all fine. But nothing in OO. OO seems to be setup to recieve J input now when I check the language options - but no scim-anthy bar or J characters appear when I type or ctrl-spc??? わからないい!!

Anychance you can clarify that one for me ... I'm almost there for Open Office - So close I can smell it ...!!
AND the best news is Kaffeine still works.

Problem solved !! やったあ !!

Turned out - I had managed with some help from the new language selector program, to select af_ZA.UTF-8 (Afrikaans language) as my default locale!!??
Changed it back to en_US.UTF-8 and wonder of wonders >>>
J input in Open-Office あるーよ!!

Might be worth watching for folks installing skim, as I certainly didn't choose afrikaans knowingly. I notice it's first on the locale list at the bottom of the screen so it maybe some kind of funky default thing.

Once again - great post Jalosxal. You're a veritable genius.
上手だね!! ありがとう!

Wish list = 1. perfect Japanese input >> got that!!
2. Flash player!! last!!

I'm happy this link is working

Again I was out from Mepis, until the last month, I was bussy in other areas. When I reinstalled Mepis I found that something is wrong whith this post: not woriking on Open Office!. But I don't know what or where. I'm happy that dukeさん found a solution because that worked also for me. If there is some expert on localization or so, we will appreciate some help. I have the impression that we need to attack the center of the problem. Ours are only partial solutions.
Anyhow, thanks dukeさん.
About your questions: I don't know why kaffeine crashes (never worked for me too)

Thank you!

Thank you very much for this post! When first trying J input, I had found other posts on this forum and tried them, then wondered why I got this and that error. I hesitantly tried this method on my test box, and have yet to find any problems, so I'll be trying it on my main now! Now I just need to figure out why trying to make my mouse back and forward buttons work was causing issues (Logitech MX400)...

ありがとうございます!

DCOP communications error

I received a "DCOP communications error" a bit after following this and rebooting after using skim for a while.

"There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The message returned by the system was:

Could not read network connection list.
/home/sean/.DCOPserver_Shikaku__0

Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!"

Can someone please help me?

most likely

that your home directory has run out of room
check that and if not so, could you start a new thread
or if you find that it is run out of room and don't know what to do, start another thread on that?

Still have lots 'o room. I

Still have lots 'o room. I guess I'll start a new thread...thanks!

doesn't work in 6.5 beta

Hi
The method described here doesn't seem to work in 6.5 beta (6).

I followed dtep by step but couldn't get skim to work.
On rebooting whenever I try to log on as root while the desktop is loading I get a message saying that Skim has caused an error and Mepis freezes up. I have to shut off the power.

Still can log in as a user.

Any help really appreciated.

Skim should be included ....

Maybe somebody with connection "higher" up in the system should suggest that this should be a priority issue. In Mepis fix&tweaks it would be great to have the possibility to include input methods for "all" non-standard languages which need an alternative input using Skim or Scim. I do not think any distribution got this as standard. By the moment on each update a lot of users will be without possibility to upgrade until somebody find a good working fix.

J-input no go 4 me in 6.5 (rc1-updated)

EDITED...for expediency
---------
Yep - I've just tried this method again on SM6.5 RC1 (fully updated) and I couldn't get past the 'Adept batch' processing.

Tried again on a fresh install of SM6.5 RC1 on my backup drive - with no updates . I reused my backup copy of 'home' so I removed the old .xinput.d and .anthy files - just in case they were causing a problem.

Managed to get right through the install process (as written in the first post above) unscathed... until the standard DCOP error on reboot at end.

I have J-input on everything except Open office!!!

Back to the drawing board....JALOSXAL!! - where are you?? - come save us.... again...!!

Gotta luv Mepis. 6.5 in bed with Beryl >> sugoii!!!!

6.5 c'mon

really hanging out for some information on how to get this going in 6.5
I really wanna stick with Mepis but will be unable to unless I can get this issue resolved and will need to move to another distro.

Still having problems

Decided to have another stab at this on a clean install of 6.5.
Followed all the instructions step by step and managed to get Jinput in everything except Ooffice.
However, after doing a full restart (not just logging out and back in) KDE would freeze while logging in as user.
Loggin in as root will work sometimes - but sometimes also freeze.

Any ideas on this? I'm at work at the moment but tonight will try getting in as root and removing Skim -otherwise Mepis is out the window for me. Could well be anyway as I do need the Jinput (although office Jinput is not essential)

Also, why, when installing the language selector do I have two copies of it in my shortcuts. One with an icon, one without??

latest beta

Release notes for the latest beta stae "improved language support."
Does this equal Japanese input now works?
