scanning mepis 6.0
I've got a scsi scanner which is recognised on bootup
and on checking the scsi bus
root@4[liz]# sh /sbin/rescan-scsi-bus.sh
Host adapter 1 (aic7xxx) found.
Host adapter 0 (usb-storage) found.

but when i start kooka or xscanimage all i get is an offer to use my tv card.
kooka from root gives me this error
kooka: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa.so.1: undefined symbol: sanei_debug_epkowa_scsi_call
but google has no matches for this error
anyone know what to do?

unstable instead
getting the libsane 1.0.18-3 from debian unstable instead and choosing the new configuration file has got me able to see the scanner as root but not as user - i'm getting closer

Have you tried lsmod to see if aic7xxx is loading and lspcifor info? Lsmod shows scsi_transport_spi and aic7xxx both loaded on my scsi rig i think scsi_transport is the controller. Lspci shows scsi storage controller: Adaptec AHA2930cu (rev 03)...
Other than that you might try disconnecting your usb stuff and a reboot to see what happens.

That was quick
Youre quick on the draw too ! I think you have it handled.

Possible Related Issue
I have what might be a similar problem. My scanner is USB and had worked just fine with SuSE 10.0 and Mepis 3.4 on the same hardware. After upgrading to Mepis 6.0 my USB interfaced Umax Astra 3400 is no longer found by Kooka. My AverMedia PCI 350 card is the only option when Kooka starts.
lsusb returns:
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 1606:0060 Umax [hex] Astra 3400U
It is also found by sane-find-scanner:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x1606 [UMAX], product=0x0060 [USB SCANNER], chip=LM9832/3) at libusb:003:003
However, it is not the same with scanimage -L or equivalent scanimage --list-devices:
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname BT878 video (AVerMedia TVPhone virtual device
which is my video capture card, actually my AverMedia PCI 350.
I get the same results as root or normal user, so my problem doesn't seem to be related to permissions. If I try xscanimage it only wants to use the video card too. I haven't been able to find a solution that works for me here or at Mepislovers and any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,

It might be the pci card is confusing the auto detection setup rouyine. You might try removing it for a while to try and set it up properly and then reinstalling it. If it doesnt see it right the first time reboot a couple of times. Anyway i would try that first.

Not the PCI card
I completely removed the card and tried your suggestion, but the only result is that with the card removed no capture device is found. Fortunately for me I have a multiple boot and can still boot into SuSE 10.0 or Windoze. I can blow off this problem for now, I got my scanning done this time, but I am still hopeful that there will be a day when I can get by with just one operating system on my box. Thanks anyway for at least venturing a guess about the problem.
Not the PCI card
Does the live cd see things properly? You might try it with and without the card installed and see if its recognised. By comparing your other linux install with Mepis might give a clue how its setup right. If one works right it gives you a comparison to emulate and check the drivers etc. that are being used.

Not working from Live CD either
I tried scanning from the live CD, it did not work either. I tried scanning from the latest Kubuntu live CD and it worked just fine. I'm running out of things to try to fix this issue. I really did want to like Mepis, but given some F/OSS as well as technical issues I may have to bail and go with something else. Thanks to those who come here to help.
