Used to play .wmv , now can't [mostly SOLVED]

Before I had to reinstall 6.0 final two days ago, I had no problem playing .avi and .wmv / .wma now I can't play any of them.

I have loaded essential codecs from mplayer site
I have loaded the codecs from automatix

They were placed in /usr/lib and /usr/lib/w32 , some even went to /usr/lib/codecs

Question #1 Where should they be?

I have No problem playing a .wmv that I have downloaded, and play with mplayer, but HOW can I play them from a website, streaming or anyway without downloading them?

Question #2 What do I need to do to enable streaming from a web site?

I even tried totem and its firefox plugin, but got an error that plugin wasn't available, when I had d/l that with synaptic also.

Question #3 Is Totem even relevant, I had hoped kaffein or mplayer would do the trick(s)

And yes, I've tweaked in settings | kde file associations to try all of the potential partners-in-crime to play these .wmv (s)

Question #4 How can I play .wmv / .wma / .avi like I did two days ago, before the latest re-install?

I really dont know about most of your questions but did you install w32codecs libdvdcss2 liblame and liblame0 . Some of these packages are needed im sure and maybe more im not thinking about.

yes, those three are installed ... but

They appear to be spread all over the place .. which is part of my question # 1

liblame0 is in /usr/share/bug/ and
/usr/share/doc

libdvdcss2 is in /usr/share/bug/ and
/usr/share/doc

w32codecs are spread all over the field:
some are in:
/usr/lib/codecs
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/w32codecs
/usr/lib/win32

Thanks for the reply, Jim Smiling

I don't know much about this

I don't know much about this stuff. So, I can't help with where codecs are supposed to be, etc.

But, did you try the obvious?

With the Mplayer plugin running in Firefox, right click on the player window and go to configuration and make sure all of the media types you want to play are checked (they may not be by default).

If they are already, try this:

If that doesn't work, try removing mplayer and the mozilla-mplayer plugin with Synaptic (just search for mplayer and both will be found) and reinstall them. Ditto for w32codecs.

Then, repeat (make sure all media types you want to play are enabled).

This part was a problem, however... as after removing w32codecs I discovered that w32codecs were no longer IN the repos, so had to go back to automatix to get them Evil

Thanks for your help !

I went around in circles a couple of times (trying the edit in the link above, too) before getting mine to work.

Fewer and fewer distros seem to have popular media formats working correctly anymore without jumping through hoops.

Fun, fun, fun. lol

All right back on gittyup go! We both learned something there. Maybe one should install this stuff a little at a time even with automatix. I didnt read the thread at mepislovers but maybe its just too mutch at one time or.......

One niggling issue left with this, tho'

While I do have sound and video playing very nicely, I find that it auto-loops continously ... that is it plays then starts again until I stop it.

In looked through all of the /etc/mplayer* and ~/.mplayer files and found no param that looks like auto-loop=0 or 1

I know the video doesn't call for loop, but I see it that way

Anyone know where I can fix this? It isn't a show-stopper, but an annoyance, that shouldn't be.

I get the codecs from the mplayer site

The ones I have at present are 'all-20050412.tar.bz2'
I unpack them to a codecs directory under /home/myhome
Then when I need them, (after a new install) copy them to /usr/lib/win32 as root overwriting any that allready exist. That's it.

You may find that much of the other stuff is solved once you have the codecs in.

Crap...

That link, where you say "This was the answer ! Nothing else worked"... is broken.

And my mplayer doesn't work, so I could have really used it...

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling with Synaptic to no avail... I get nothing in Kaffeine and garbled horizontal bar on top of the screen with KPlayer... =(

Help?

This is it

If you're talking about the link I posted that appeared to work for some people, I copied the post from the thread linked to back in August and e-mailed it to myself. I have a habit of doing that for fixes to stuff. lol

I think some of the forum stuff got moved around there. But, here is the post from this link (at that time anyway):

The ubuntu guys strike again...mozilla-mplayer has no mimetypes configured heres what you got to do:

1) go to /etc
2) open mplayerplug-in.conf with your favorite text editor as root
3)set these options all like below
enable-smil=1
enable-helix=1
enable-rm=1
enable-mpeg=1
enable-ogg=1
enable-wmp=1
enable-qt=1
enable-gmp=1

thats it restart firefox and all set Smiley

That may not be your problem, though. What version of SimplyMEPIS are you running? I've had some issues with codecs being a bit "finnicky" between versions.

If you're running 6.0 Final, try the solution (and codecs) shown in this post:

http://www.mepis.org/node/11102

If you're running a newer beta or RC, if you enable all of the sources and install w32codecs via Synaptic, the one found should work.
