xserver-xorg-core upgrade

Thanks for being on top of the problem, but the thing is that I've already upgraded and am now sitting here wondering whether I should turn my computer off or not until I know what's up with this. A recommendation to those who did the upgrade might help us out while you're working on it. Thanks.

I've already upgraded

Start the Konsol and type:

apt-get update
apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10

For those that have not installed this bad upgrade, you can lock your current xserver-xorg-core package so it will not be seen as an upgrade. While in Synaptic select your current xserver-xorg-core and go to the tab Package, Lock Version. After this problem is solved you can unlock the package and upgrade if you want.

I've copied this one down for future reference, so thanks. In the meantime, fortunately the upgrade doesn't seem to have damaged anything in my case, but these things happen, so it does help to know what to do.

Don't forget using the MEPIS livecd to boot your PC and get back online to get help if things go weird after an update.

I recieved e-mail from

I recieved e-mail from Warren and it seems that the xorg problem is chipset based as one was not affected while the other got the bad results.Seems his Intel was not affected while my AMD got whopped. The locking of the old file is the best idea while Warren works on a fix for this, at this time. Another of the advantages of Linux a problem rears it's ugly head the solutions are in forums within a hour and the fix is in the works.

Problem solved, I see

The quick response in getting the news out and getting a fix for this glitch in the Ubuntu repositories certainly confirms that Warren's decision to switch was the right one, as if we didn't already know. It also tells me why Mepis is my main linux distro, and why others that pass through my hard drive are just experimental . . . as if I already didn't know.

xserver-xorg-core

I upgraded 6.0 the other night. How can I tell if I upgraded xserver-xorg-core?

Thanks,
Mike
