Where did the GUI go ?

Fresh install of Mepis 6, I wanted to reduce the screen res to 1024x768, after choosing this and pressing ok I had a black screen.
I assume this was a full screen console as a few seconds later there were messages about the martians or something.
Mepis boots, but no GUI
I enter the root password and if I wait long enough I get more messages from the martians
Can I type something at the $ prompt to get a desktop or do I have to re-install ?
( for the 3rd time !! )
Edit :
Came across the command startx in another post, I now get an error message relating to libGLcore or something similar.
can't find how to force it into "safe" graphics mode.
Is there a point at bootup where I can press an F key and choose some options ?
The only graphical part of the boot process that I can see is right at the start, it shows a command line at the bottom of the screen, "/dev/hda etc etc ... vga=normal .. what options other than normal are there ?
Thanks, but in the meantime

Thanks, but in the meantime I had a crazy idea that I could boot from the live cd and copy a few items from the /etc/x11 folder to the hda1 partition.. and after a long struggle and the realisation that I had to mount the partition first .....
IT WORKED
I now find that Mepis did indeed detect the correct chipset
( CLE266 on a mini-itx board ).
The problem was with the cruddy old Dell monitor.
Actually the moral here is don't install using a 19" monitor and then move to a 15"
Try it with vga=791. You can

Try it with vga=791.
You can change it in the Grub menu > boot options line at the bottom.
