Kmail Thunderbird - neither connect to SMTP in 6.0

I just cannot get KMail or Thunderbird to send mail correctly. (They *will* receive, no problem.)

Using MEPIS 6.0 on Latitude C610.

The account is mxxxxxxx-x through 1and1.com (my own domain). Configured Thunderbird just as 1and1.com recommends in their FAQ. Outgoing is smtp.1and1.com, port 587 (rather than 25 - but have tried it both ways), authentication with mxxxxxxx-x and password ******. When I "send" it gives the "progress bar" which never ends/stops.

In Kmail about the same thing. But I consistently get a message "cannot connect to smtp.1and1.com". (Thanks for an error msg!)

What is very odd is that I have sent using Thunderbird in Windows with exactly (I think) the same settings. So... why can't I "connect" to smtp.1and1.com only when using Thunderbird or KMail in MEPIS 6.0?

Thanks for the help!

SMTP Server

You may have to use your ISP's SMTP. I wish I knew more but that is all I know.

SimplyMEPIS 6.0 - kernel 2.6.15-26-686-SMP - KDE 3.5.3

.......

Does this smtp server belongs to your ISP ?
You can try telnet to this smtp server:
"telnet smtp.land1.com 25"
You can read a lot about email servers from here http://jenkins.hopto.org

I've read your pages, but reading and doing are two different things and I'm just plain scared of playing with servers. Now if somebody wanted to walk me thru it..hint..hint. I would love to have a setup like yours, my own ftp and email, that would be real sweet. By the way I use sbcglobal.net dsl, dhcp, Linksys BEFSR41 router and SpeedStream 4100 modem. Eye-wink

Problem is only in Mepis 6.0

Thanks for the replies.

1) No, the smtp server does not belong to the isp. But...

1b) That is why one uses port 587 (just as 1and1.com FAQ specifies) instead of 25. There are clear instructions how to send with a 3rd part isp, and they normally work. Works like a charm in Thunderbird running in Windows. Just not Thunderbird (or KMail) running in Mepis 6.0.

1c) So... I know what I'm doing... it works fine in Windows... just not here.

2) Did I not see other people on this forum report a similar problem?

When In Doubt Shout

Attached configs working here....

Thunderbird>>edit>>account settings>>Outgoing Server (SMTP)>>
Add or Edit a server with the below example...

Description: Anything you want to call it
Server Name: smtp.your isp's smtp server name.com
Port: 25
Security and Authentication
Use Name and Password: Check this box
Username: your login...most of the time it's your
full email address...

Use secure connection: This one can be tricky
I have three different ones
the first one doesn't use any authentication
the second one uses TLS
the third one uses SSL

You will just have to ask your isp or try all three
one at a time.

let us know in here if you succeed...

i agree

i have my own mailserver etc, and i just send everything out to port 25, just like burdicda does.
in kmail you can send out a test message to see what authentication the server requires.
