The most disappointing MEPIS to date

I was a great fan of this distro up until 3.4.3. I must have gone through 200-300 CDs giving the MEPIS distro to anyone that would listen or pay attention. I never resolved issues with a broadcom wireless card, but everything else worked wonderfully on my laptop, so I just said, "oh well" and bought a PCMCIA Cisco Aironet card and moved on.
I really don't care much for Ubuntu and when it was announced that MEPIS and Ubuntu were getting in bed together I was disheartened.
I downloaded the latest distro anyway and immediately installed it to see what kind of progress has been made. Half of the stuff that worked flawlessly before (like sound, Frozen Bubble, etc. etc.) failed to function.
It seems that MEPIS is becoming bloatware also. I like choices but my original attraction to Linux was that I could run it on older systems that strained under the bloat of Windows 2000 and XP.
I have now switched to using Puppy, DSL, or (on better systems) PCLinuxOS. They are fast user-friendly and agile distros which I can use to accomplish what I need to get done without spending all of my time trying to figure out what works and what doesn't.
Maybe in the future I will look at MEPIS again, but right now, I think that I am going to stick with the other distros (especially PCLinuxOS)
Mepis is a victim of Linux's success

I remember when I first tried Mepis 2003.10, I was blown away. Finally something that just worked, even without installing to the hard drive. And installing to the hard drive was a matter of about 12 minutes.
Wow! I was just awestruck.
But soon others were doing similar work and now Mepis seems like just another top-notch distro. Excellent, yes, but not necessarily head and shoulders above everybody else.
Wouldn't it be nice if Warren and Texstar and, who else?, could work together on an uber-distro? As it is, Mepis is still the best available for many people.

I like PCLinuxOS "minime" for that reason. Anticapitalista is working on a version like that for SimplyMEPIS. I don't know when it will be ready but check back now and then and give it a try. I'll be waiting with baited breath, as I'm sure others will, and I'm sure that many of us will be glad to take it for a spin.
