Strange Problem
I don't even know what to put as a topic on this one.
I use Apollon as my favored P2P and it has been an excellent choice for me until now. It started acting srange and failed to connect blaming the gift damean for the problem so l started to uninstall, reinstall and such to try to get things working but to no avail. I started going into the Advanced tab and delete and re-add the pluggins(giFT-FasTrack,giFT-Gnutella,giFT-openFT). Everytime l did this my whole OS would lockup solid when l clicked on the OK button(even the fish in the panel). I would have to do a reset on my box. I then deleted everything l could through Synaptic(giFT,giftd, Apollon etc.) Then l used Find to located and delete more. Lastly l was down to /home/wayne/.gifT . Now here it got interesting ... evertime l tried to delete it everything locked up and l had to do a reset on the box. I booted up in PCLinux and it locked it up too when l tried to delete it. Next l booted up with the live 6.0 CD and sure enough it locked it up too. Finally l racked my brain for a solution and decide to try to move it out of home to the desktop and it let me make the move. It is now on my Desktop according to Find but l can't see it. If l could see it l would try to move it to the Trash but it is nowhere to be seen. I don't know at this time if my problem is gone or not?

Hardware Dying?
Hey there Wayne! I'm wondering if some of your hardware might be reaching "end-of-life"? Do you have a temporary box that you can wander the hard drive over to and reboot with the Live CD? If you move the drive, reboot with the Live CD and get the same result then it's probably a drive getting ready to go bye-bye. Especially since you said you tried a different distro.
Also, how's your memory (on the computer, not your brain)

Any file that has a .(dot) in front of it is a hiddin file. To see hidden files on your desktop, right click on your desktop, configure desktop, behavior, file icons and check show hidden files.

Two Thoughts
Well Wayne, you are introducing another challenging problem to the crew! I have two thoughts to see if we can narrow down where the problem is.
First, if it is fairly easy, since you mention two different sets of memory, is it possible to take one stick out at a time and see if the problem persists? If it happens when one stick is in, but goes away when you put the other one in its place then it seems to point the finger at that stick of memory? You could even swap places to see if the problem happens "faster".
Next, (but probably easier to do first). I would go down into the .giFT directory. What are you looking for? symbolic links to other directories. I'm guessing that when you are doing recursive deletions on the (sub-)directories, that one of those sub-directories points to a very important system directory. Are you doing the deletions as user root? If so then if you had a symbolic link buried down in .giFT that pointed to, oh, /etc/X11 or /usr/sbin that you might be deleting more than you think (oops!)
Unfortunately, looking for this will be a slow-going process. I'll see if I can think of any other ideas to help with the search, but my guess is the second issue will be the problem. Let me know if you find any links going outside of the .giFT sub-directory. Deleting the link is fairly easy. From a konsole, go to the sub-directory where the symbolic link exists and issue "rm linkname":
OK
