More Info

Barry, you indicate that you have been using Mepis for a couple weeks. Have you recently done any type of update/upgrade to your system or add any particular applications? If so, what messages did you get before and after?

Also, when your system says, "root login not allowed", can you please be more specific as to where you are seeing that message? Are you seeing in in the kdm GUI screen, one of the text consoles (ctl+alt+f1 through f6) or somewhere else? What are you trying to do that you get the message?

Also, question number 34b: Did you change the root's password recently?

Once we know better what you have done or wanted to do, we can give you better advice. If you accidently changd the root password and forgot it you can use the Live CD to reboot your system and make a few changes, but give us some more info first Smiling

Jon

is it just on kde

can you not-logon as root on kde ONLY?

Looks like KDM is the issue

I think you've managed to update kdm and it replaced your original configuration file.

Go to /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc and make sure "AllowRootLogin=true"
