Favorite tweaks?

I was curious as to what types of tweaks or software additions were popular among Mepis users. Also I was trying to get a sense of which of those tweaks/software users would like to see in future versions of Mepis.

For my tweaks, I usually:
1. Set the KDE background to "slide show" which changes backgrounds every 1 minute. I then download a hundred or more backgrounds, so I never get tired of one picture.
2. Get rid of the fish bowl.
3. Set the Energy Setting to Powersave (It makes my laptop run cooler).
4. Get 915resolution working to 1280x800 resolution.
5. Run automatix
6. Set the folders options to "Detailed View" -- The file name always gets cut off in the "icon view" setting.
7. Download ascii fish tank screensaver -- It's the only screen saver that I can get to actually turn on (I know, I tried the KDE fix thing, but it wouldn't work).
8. Download Opera (There are a few websites that look better with Opera, although most look better with Firefox). I usually have to add the Opera link to the KDE start panel since the install won't create the link properly.

#7 sounds irritating

#7 sounds irritating, have you tried stopping KDM, then restarting it after installing the fix. It's what worked for me.
To do this log out of your account. At the login screen press Ctrl+Alt+F1 then enter your root password. Once your logged in as root type [service kdm stop] then type [service kdm start]. You can now log out of root, press Ctrl+Alt=F1. The fix should now be working.

Those fish

On my system the fish must stay for the time being as an indicator of system stall until I can find out what darn service causes them to stop swimming for 2-3 seconds at a time, along with no mouse click or keyboard input response. Moving a window about causes such a load that the symptoms stay for 5-6 seconds at a time. This happens when one has started a new session. Sad

I look forward to dumping the fish!

My Setup

1. Remove KAquarium Applet
2. Remove APT Notify Applet
3. Remove System Monitor Applet
4. Hide the Applet Handles by right clicking on taskbar > configure panel... > Appearence > Advanced Options
5. Add KWifiManager in synaptic by searching for "kwifimanager" (MEPIS DEFINATELY should start automatically doing this)
6. Give taskbar Transparency with black tint
7. Set clock date to MM-DD-YY
8. Set a cool background
9. Edit the properties of the clock to make the background/shadow black and the foreground green to make it as close to the transparent tint as i can
10. Change the Konsole Schema to "Transparent for MC" so I can see my cool background while I type in commands.
11. Setup my taskbar with the menus in order left to right...
KStartMenu|System|FileManagement "Super User" Mode|Home|Firefox|Thunderbird Mail
12. Install and setup GIMP (you should have this install automatically with your distribution)

My Tweaks

After hd installation, install
kwifimanager + wifiradar, gimp + many plugins, gwenview (and set as default viewer), inkscape, bibletime, kiso, nvu, audacity, xine, wine, cups-pdf, linux-headers, w32codecs, libdvdcss, scribus

Resize taskbar to 48 pixels to double-stack tray icons
change weather report to local station, add quicklauncher applet to panel, remove all standard icons except show desktop and add them back into quicklauncher as tiny icons to double taskbar real-estate - required for using the GIMP

Change view preferences in konqueror to multicolumn view and set icon text in konqueror preferences to 650 pixels to correct truncated file names, change icon size to tiny, display root navigation panel and save preferences incl page size.

Those are my main tweaks and additions and the fishies live to swim another day.

My tweaks

Basically I like Mepis for it's engine (mutilities, kernel, minstaller) not its body (I like it to be light and fast), so I remove the fish, weather, splashy and lots of KDE apps, heavy appsI don't need.

Install fluxbox, rox, sylpheed-claws, dillo

A superfast and lite Mepis.
