*UPDATED, LINKS WORK AGAIN*
The below guide is for MEPIS Linux although may possibly be applied to other builds of linux.
First you must install the following for Kaffiene.
Click on the first "here" and then download the following files (Do NOT Install yet)...

libdvdcss2_1.2.8-1unofficialubuntu4_i386.deb
w32codecs_20060611-0unofficialubuntu1_i386.deb

Then after that open your Synaptic Package Manager by clicking KStartMenu > Run Command > type in "synaptic" without quotes
Do a search for "mplayer" without quotes and install the package that says mplayer (not mozilla-mplayer)
Then install both of the files that you downloaded (simply buy opening them and then clicking install)
After that go back to Synaptic and then do a search for "mplayerplug-in"
Install "mozilla-mplayer"

Congratulations!!! You can now play streaming Windows Media in Firefox on MEPIS Linux!
Now go to http://www.cnn.com/US/ and click on a video to test it.

I've tried this method and

I've tried this method and STILL cannot play streaming videos.
On the upside, my DVD player works!

This makes codecs, plus many

This happened to me as well. After you have the above files installed open synaptic again (look at the tutorial above for how to open it). Do a search for mplayer. Find mplayer-mozilla in the list and then right click on it and select reinstall. It should work now.

http://www.cnn.com/ to try it out

It downloaded fine for me.
Try this out. Don't click on the link and wait for it to download. Right Click on the link and select "Save Link As..."
Let me know if that worked for you.

Hi Sam

Hi Sam
Tried out your suggestion but it stalled again at 1%
Thanks George
EDIT
I downloaded the file on my son's laptop using M$ xp. I will retry later on my eMachines pc.
EDIT
downloaded both files in Win$ and copied to home. installed both with Kpackage. installed mozilla-player. Still does not work.
Examination of files in "Synaptic" shows that libdvdcss2 and win32codecs have downloads of "0 B" What do you think I have done wrong?
George

sag47's picture

Impossible??? nope

Hey George,
Were you actually able to obtain the packages and install them (even if they don't work...yet)?

Try downloading them using the Konqueror web browser rather than Firefox...

I've made several download attempts with all my machines...all were successful and I've even re-uploaded the files to my webserver via FTP incase there was some sort of file system error on the server (that would fix it). However I'm still trying to comprehend the cause of your problem. None-the-less we shall get to the bottom of it.

Hi Sam I have managed to

Hi Sam
I have managed to download libdvdcss2 from your site but still cannot get past 2% download of w32codecs.
I have also tried downloading (through Konqueror) the files from the site www.pages.drexel.edu but cannot find them on the site.
I can download them from your post using win$ xp and transferring them to "home". Synaptic tells me the files have been installed but in the "downloads" column they both show zero bytes.
Something like this happened to me some years ago in win$ but it turned out I was trying to install a link and not the programme.

http://www.pages.drexel.edu/

http://www.pages.drexel.edu/ is my school webserver.
My homepage is http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~sag47/

But the codecs aren't on my website pages. So I made a direct download link on here for http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~sag47/w32codecs_20060611-0unofficialubuntu1_i386.deb

Try clicking on that link while in Konqueror.
(Or copy that link into conqueror by right clicking on the link and selecting "Copy Link Location" and then paste it into Konqueror)

Actually I'm starting to get problems downloading via http (but I can still do it through ftp). So I think I've reached my bandwidth quota although it doesn't "officially" say it.

Here is an alternative Link to some w32codecs for now. I don't know if they work correctly with MEPIS because I haven't ever tried them.
http://www.ubuntu-tr.com/download/w32codecs.deb
Sorry for the inconvenience. The links should be working again in about a week or so. I think it's limited week be week. Sad SAM

Hi Sam Before your post

Hi Sam
Before your post reached me, I followed the advice of my friend TCASE who suggested that I download the files with Kget. I did this, followed the rest of your instructions and YEAH I have streaming video from CNN. I have never before used Konqueror as a web browser so I am going to find out how to do it.
Thank you very much for your help and for the streaming video.
George

Hello again SamI have

Hello again Sam

I have successfully installed and used the video streamer on my main machine.
I am now attempting to install it on my slower machine.
I have successfully (this time) downloaded both files to /home/george/downloads AND /root/downloads.
Both files install from both locations with Kpackage (which is the default) but when I go to Synaptic, it sees them loaded again with 0 bytes. A search of the properties of the files in Synaptic tells me that they are there (libdvdcss2 94.2kB, w32 codecs 26.4MB)
If I try to load them with Synaptic using File > add downloaded packages, then navigate to either of the downloaded directories, then the files are greyed out and do not load.
Have you any idea what is happening here? I have just spent 6hrs trying to make sense of it.
George
ps 20mins later I tried again to view cnn and it worked. I am definitely confused now.

I don't know, haha. That

I don't know, haha. That sounds pretty whacky to me. I'll roll it over in my head for a while and see if I can come up with anything. I found that reinstalling the mplayer-mozilla-plugin after installing the codecs kind of jump starts it to work (even after it stops working from previous working times, if that makes sense...?).

Sam, please change your sig, it should be "professional Technalign techs" not "professional MEPIS techs" this is misleading.

kb.tafusion.org is TaFusion Knowledge Base not "Mepis Knowledge Base"

I already mentioned this in another thread that you took part, I hope you'll comply this time.

Thanks.

Yea I just got rid of it all together. I just got done reading that mess in that other "64-bit" but actually AMD/Intel processor optimized kernel thread.
Sorry about that and take it easy, if I could go back and change everything I would. There's no need to be so openly harsh man.

Couldn't you just invite me to that private discussion since you're a moderator? I sent the message to joeinten but should I have sent it to you instead? I wasn't sure since I figured you wanted me to send it to someone else because you told me to use the form.

Sending it to joeinten made sense because he was the one who suggested the closed discussion.

sory if I insulted you by being a smart alec. I sometimes have a short temper and so my mouth goes off without thinking although I try to stay as professional as possible given the field I am in.
SAM

P.S. I was away for the weekend (went to my parents) and that is why I didn't defend myself or say anything at all while that was going on. When I came back there were 41 new posts to my surprise (which I totally didn't expect).

I don't participate in any

I don't participate in any closed discussion, anyway I plan to go to sleep right now. You have now the form and you can contact any mod privately, if you need to, without having to post on the forum. Thanks.

Works in Konqueror not firefox

I followed your instructions and could not display the windows video until I tried it in konqueror. No problem there. Is there an adjustment that I need to make in firefox to let this happen?

thanks
